Gulf Labor Artist Coalition in Venice

The exhibition has invited as participants the collective Gulf Labor Coalition, which strives to ensure that workers’ rights are protected when contemporary art, precarious labor, and global capital intersect. Coalition members include artists, writers, architects, curators, and other cultural workers. The Coalition’s contribution to this year Art Biennalewill take the form of a public report in a series of plenary sessions dedicated to its investigations of labor conditions in the Persian Gulf and South Asia. Gulf Labor Coalition’s current focus is the ongoing construction of new cultural institutions on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE. But whether engaged in direct action or streaming critical imagery, the group’s practice takes place in a public context that pivots on the imaginative and tactical leveraging of aggregated cultural and social capital.

Most recently Gulf Labor completed 52 Weeks, a year-long campaign (October 2013 to October 2014) in which artists, writers, and activists from different cities and countries contributed a work, a text, or an action each week that would highlight the coercive recruitment and deplorable living and working conditions of migrant laborers in Abu Dhabi. Because the Coalition’s focus on migratory and hazardous labor extends to similar conditions around the globe, they are constantly generating new research and interventionist campaigns.

Frammenti Expo ‘67: Alexander Calder Emilio Vedova

Three Disks / Trois Disque, poi modificato in Man / L’homme.

Invisible Beauty - Iraq Pavilion

Ruya Foundation announces plans for National Pavilion of Iraq at 56th Venice Biennale 2015 and a collaboration with Ai Weiwei

The Ruya Foundation for Contemporary Culture in Iraq (Ruya) is pleased to announce its plans for the National Pavilion of Iraq at the 56th Venice Biennale in May 2015. The exhibition, Invisible Beauty, will be curated by Philippe Van Cauteren, Artistic Director of S.M.A.K. (Museum for Contemporary Art). It will feature five contemporary Iraqi artists, two generations of Iraqi photographers, in the shape of Latif Al Ani and Akam Shex Hadi, visual artist Rabab Ghazoul, ceramicist and sculptor Salam Atta Sabri and painter Haider Jabbar. The exhibition will include new works that have been produced specifically for the exhibition as well as works that have been rediscovered after long periods of inattention.

To accompany the exhibition, a catalogue will be published by Mousse Publishing in association with the Ruya Foundation. The catalogue will include original contributions by Seamus Kealy, Tamara Chalabi, Lamia Al-Gailani Werr, Fares Haram, Karen McKinnon, Ali Bader, Luk Lambrecht, Sherko Bekas, Atyaf Rasheed and Philippe Van Cauteren.

TRACES OF SURVIVAL: Drawings by Refugees in Iraq selected by Ai Weiwei

The exhibition will also be accompanied by a display of drawings made by refugees in northern Iraq. World renowned artist Ai Weiwei has selected a number of these drawings for a major publication that will launch at the Biennale, TRACES OF SURVIVAL: Drawings by Refugees in Iraq selected by Ai Weiwei.

RUYA hosted a talk on art in Iraq at Art Dubai last week, to announce the artists selected for theNational Pavilion of Iraq at the 56th Venice Biennale and as well as shed light on the state of the arts in Iraq today.
Curator Philippe Van Cauteren introduced the theme of this year’s Pavilion, Invisible Beauty. The theme reflects on unusual or unexpected elements in the selected artists’ work, as well as the invisibility of Iraqi artists on the international stage.

“Seeing the conditions of the city of Baghdad, and its institutions, we had to approach the notion of contemporary art differently,” he explained.
Van Cauteren also announced the selected artists for this year’s show, photographers Latif Al Ani and Akam Shex Hadi, visual artist Rabab Ghazoul, ceramicist and sculptor Salam Atta Sabri and painter Haider Jabbar, who currently has a year long residency in Samsun, Turkey, supported by RUYA.
All of these artists, he argues, “take a position on their own identity, through documenting, creating inventories or stocking up experiences together”.
“Last year we focused on artists from inside Iraq,” said Reem Shather-Kubba, “this year we want to create a dialogue between artists in Iraq and the diaspora.”
When asked about his trip to Iraq, Van Cauteren described it as a “reality check”. “As a curator,” he explained, “it grounds you and makes you reflect on what art means and should be”.
Van Cauteren hopes to curate an exhibition of international artists in Baghdad in the near future, as part of RUYA’s mission to build cultural bridges between Iraq and the world.
RUYA co-founders Reem Shather-Kubba, Tamara Chalabi and Shwan Taha spoke about the impact and challenges of supporting the arts from within Iraq.
As well as the logistical problems, such as transporting works or securing visas for curators and the artists, they explained that the cultural scene is still recovering from decades of conflict and trauma.
Highlighting the effects of an art scene that was largely state-driven until now, Tamara Chalabi said, “Art is a form of self-expression, but often, artists in Iraq do not do that. They are preoccupied with form and color, there is an implicit and often unconscious self censorship ”.
This became apparent during RUYA’s studio visits in Baghdad, where Philippe met and mentored artists, including those not selected for the Biennale.
Chalabi also displayed examples of street art, such as murals on blast walls and other attempts to beautify the city of Baghdad.
RUYA also announced their collaboration with Ai Weiwei on a major publication, Traces of Survival: Drawings by Refugees in Iraq Selected by Ai Weiwei. In December 2014 Ruya launched a campaign to provide drawing materials to adult men and women in refugee camps in northern Iraq. All 546 submissions, including drawings, poetry and prose, will go on display at the Pavilion and the publication will launch at the Biennale.

On 7 May 2015, as part of its programme for the National Pavilion of Iraq at the 56th Venice Biennale, RUYA is hosting a panel discussion on art, conflict and Iraq.
The panel will examine the role of art in conflict, and the ways in which artists’ contributions to this subject can be an effective element of change. Among the questions to be raised are:
  • Is the role of the arts increasingly relevant in communicating personal and political dimensions of a conflict – as a tool of self reflection and creativity that allows us to think outside of the boundaries constructed in conflict narratives?
  • Can art be a viable medium for resistance?
  • How has the public role of the artist changed?
  • Can art be a catalyst for recovering from trauma in post-conflict situations?
  • Can art be an alternative medium for communication (through images, symbols and personal narratives) in highly volatile situations where communication is difficult?
  • Despite decades of conflict, artists in the visual, literary and performing arts continue to practice within Iraq. The role that violence and trauma plays in the daily lives of these artists is impossible to ignore. The recent attacks and cultural cleansing make discussions about art in conflict zones more important than ever.
The panel speakers are:
Lamia Al-Gailani Werrleading archeologist who has written extensively on Iraqi archeology and cultural heritage, based at UCL, London.
Charles TrippProfessor of Politics at SOAS, London and author of A History of Iraq (2008) among others. He is a member Culture+Conflict, a UK based NGO.
Justine Hardy, author and trauma psychologist who founded the groundbreaking mental health project Healing Kashmir.
Kader AttiaFrench-Algerian artist who focuses on the aesthetics and ethics of different cultures, as well as the theme of reparation. He has appeared at international exhibitions like DOCUMENTA (2012).
Giles Keppel, political scientist and specialist of contemporary Middle Eastern politics, and author of The War for Muslim Minds: Islam and the West (2004).
Tamara Chalabi, historian and author, and chairman of Ruya Foundation that commissioned theNational Pavilion of Iraq at the Venice Biennale in both 2013 and 2015.
Philippe Van Cauteren, Artistic Director of S.M.A.K, Ghent and curator of the National Pavilion of Iraq at the 56th Venice Biennale.

PROPORTIO

Ellsworth Kelly, Red, Yellow, Blue, 1963. © Ellsworth Kelly.

PROPORTIO is the new exhibition in Palazzo Fortuny during the Biennale di Venezia curated by Axel Vervoordt and Daniela Ferretti, en suite to the highly acclaimed exhibitions from the past Artempo (2007), In-finitum (2009), TRA (2011) and Tàpies, lo sguardo dell’artista (2013).  Organised by the Axel & May Vervoordt Foundation and the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, the exhibition will explores the omnipresence of universal proportions in art, science, music and architecture.

Proportions are present in the cosmos, in the natural world and in humans. It can be proven that these proportions are also favoured in art, architecture and music and determine our sense of harmony and balance. Articulated around a series of themes, including the ‘Sacred Numbers’, the Fibonacci sequence, the hypotenuse, Squaring the Circle and Le Corbusier’s Modulor, the exhibition is an invitation to reflect on the dynamic relationship between order and chaos.

PROPORTIO will feature specially commissioned works by leading artists such as Marina Abramovic, Anish Kapoor, Massimo Bartolini, Rei Naito, Michael Borremans, Izhar Patkin, Maurizio Donzelli, Otto Boll, Francesco Candeloro, Riccardo De Marchi and Arthur Duff which will be exhibited alongside existing pieces by Ellsworth Kelly, Sol Lewitt, Alberto Giacometti, Carl André, Agnes Martin, Fausto Melotti, Mario Merz and Francesco Candeloro, as well as some Egyptian artefacts, a series of Dutch Old Master architectural paintings, a portrait by Botticelli and a monumental sculpture by Antonio Canova.

France Pavilion

Philippine Pavilion - Tie A String Around the World

Artists: Manuel Conde, Carlos Francisco, Manny Montelibano, Jose Tence Ruiz
Curator: Patrick D. Flores
The Philippine Pavilion moves around Manuel Conde’s Genghis Khan, a seminal Philippine film made in 1950 in Manila and Angono; re-edited and annotated by the American writer-critic James Agee; and screened at the Museum of Modern Art and the Venice Film Festival in 1952. It was co-written and designed by Carlos Francisco. Conde and Francisco are National Artists of the Philippines. The theme of the Pavilion comes from the line uttered by Genghis Khan at the end of the film as he promised his lady to lay the empire he will conquer at her feet.
As the Philippine representation returns to Venice in 2015 after fifty-one years, so is the film revisited as a trajectory into the very idea of Venice as the place that first recognized the country through the moving image. This travel offers an opportunity to reflect on the condition of the world today and the potential of a Philippine Pavilion to initiate a conversation on the changing configurations of this world--on the volatile meanings of territory, country, nation, border,  patrimony, nature, freedom, limit,  and the “present passing.”

At a tangent to Genghis Khan, the work of Jose Tence Ruiz, Shoal, references the Sierra Madre. TheNew York Times describes it as the vessel of Vietnam War vintage that “the Philippine government ran aground on the reef in 1999 and has since maintained as a kind of post-apocalyptic military garrison, the small detachment of Filipino troops stationed there struggling to survive extreme mental and physical desolation.” Ruiz evokes the spectral ship as an ambivalent silhouette of a shoal through his assemblage of metal, velvet, and wood. The trace that is also a monument thus settles into and becomes a reef-outpost-detritus-ark floating on a contested vastness, at once forlorn and prevailing both as saga and shipwreck.
For his part, Manny Montelibano presents the multi-channel video piece, A Dashed State, on the West Philippine Sea, which is part of the disputed South China Sea. It dwells on the atmosphere of a lush locale, particularly the sound of epics and radio frequencies that crisscross the expanse, and the vignettes of seemingly uneventful life ways of islands. The film invites discussion on the history of world making and the history of the sea in the long duration, and in relation to the histories of empires, nation-states, and regions. From the vantage point of Palawan, threshold to Borneo and the South China Sea, Montelibano films the conditions of the impossible: what makes a common sea and where do frontier and edge, melancholy and migration lie.

"Parliament of Forms".

Vik Muniz - Lampedusa at the 56th Venice Biennale

Lampedusa is a floating installation to be launched during the 56th Venice Biennale. For this public artwork, Vik Muniz employs his traditional use of unlikely materials and scale manipulation to generate wonder from predictability.

Contextualized in the naval environment of Venice, Lampedusa is an effigy of a paper boat built to scale of one of the town’s traditional vaporettos. Boats of all kinds are a common sight in Venice but a forty-five feet paper boat will certainly disrupt the viewers’ impression of being part of a postcard.

Assegnati i Leoni d'Oro
