The EDP Foundation will be the Main Patron of Portugal’s Official Representation at the 59th edition of the Venice Biennale, which will take place between 23 April and 27 November 2022.

Pedro Neves Marques is the artist selected to represent Portugal in Venice with the project “Vampires in Space” which, according to curators João Mourão and Luís Silva, will consist of “a narrative installation which will transform the second floor of Palazzo Franchetti, on the margins of the Venice Grand Canal, through a combination of films, poems and scenography inside an unexpected space ship inhabited by vampires”.

“Supporting the Portuguese representation at the Venice Biennale is consistent with one of the main pillars of the EDP Foundation’s activity: to promote Portuguese artists and their internationalization. In fact, it is within this context that the EDP Foundation will continue its cultural mission in 2022, by issuing the New Artists Award, patronizing several institutions and continuing to publish Electra magazine,” says Vera Pinto Pereira, President of the EDP Foundation.

The EDP Foundation supported the Portuguese Representation at the International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia for the first time in 2013, the year when Joana Vasconcelos – the first beneficiary of the EDP Foundation New Artists Award, in 2000 – presented the project “Trafaria Praia”. The EDP Foundation continued its support in 2015 and 2017, the years when Portugal presented the works “I Will Be Your Mirror” and “Medida Incerta” (“Uncertain Measure”), by artists João Louro and José Pedro Croft, respectively. The EDP Foundation also supported the 15th International Architecture Exhibition, which took place in 2016, in which Álvaro Siza Vieira represented Portugal with a social housing project for the Island of Giudecca, in Venice.

Taiwan’s Representation at the 59th Venice Biennale 2022 Kinerapan: Right of Crawling

Sakuliu Conveys Reflection on Interspecies Co-sharing and Coexistence

Taipei Fine Arts Museum, along with artist Sakuliu and curator Patrick Flores, have the pleasure to announce Kinerapan: Right of Crawling, the new project representing Taiwan at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022. Sakuliu will create a spiritual site which comprises several new works including sculpture, installation and animation that collectively tell a contemporary story through the traditional indigenous narrative.

Sakuliu was born in Sandimen Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan (Tavadran Village of the Paiwan people). Having grown up in a family of artisans, he has developed works encompassing such diverse forms as painting, sculpture, installation and architecture. Concerned that his traditional culture was being eroded or was even gradually disappearing, Sakuliu decided to actively sustain and revive it by documenting tribal wisdom in drawings and manuscripts, rebuilding stone slab houses, creating sculptures and leading ethnic awareness movements. His creative practice is rooted in engagement with everyday society, and his status as a well-rounded artist won him the National Culture and Arts Award in the fine arts category in 2018. He has recently concentrated on classical Paiwan philosophy, expressing his thought and research findings in both text and image form.

The exhibition title “Kinerapan” is a Paiwan word, which carries a wide range of meanings, from the plant crawling to scope, distance and depth, such as the area covered by a vast forest, the distance travelled by a river, or the space inhabited by a species. Broadly speaking, the word implies both abstract distance and temporal span, including the farthest that one’s imagination can reach. Also, in the development of the human being, the crawling stage is important in the struggle with gravity and in the beginning of exploring the world. The concept of “right” is centered on the quest for fairness and dignity. The exhibition is built upon two main ethical systems: the “Semiljeva” (Paiwan for joy of sharing and giving) and “Lingulj” (Paiwan for circle, emblematic of concentric, iterative giving) – to introduce a network of symbiosis and coexistence fostered by interspecies reciprocity and interdependence. Through representing the spatial order, belief and value system of the indigenous culture, the artist responds to the changing society as well as the conflicts, anxieties and tensions it has incurred over time.

For the exhibitionSakuliu will use an artistic language informed by storytelling and imagination to guide the audience into a spiritual world that evokes contemporary reality and life. The artist projects his imagination through constructing a space symbolic of a family house that embodies Paiwan worldview: “What would it be like if the Earth were a stone-slab house and the planet’s entire population were my family? How should I envision such a more expansive space of Kinerapan and those inhabiting it?” When organic crops are exchanged into long-lasting inorganic currency, what is its effect on the concept of sharing? How does one judge the ownership of fruits if the plants have crawled into the neighbors’ fields? Starting from indigenous art, Sakuliu has always kept alert and sensitive to interactions between multiple cultural roots. His art practice has continuously translated the profound legacies of local wisdom and technology to meditate on cross-cultural issues in contemporary society and redistribute the indigenous genealogy across and into various historical contexts. Sakuliu states, “I use my personal understandings of space, land and ecology as my script and try to find a suitable way based on Paiwan cosmic view to convey, allowing knowledge to be transmitted across cultural differences as well as through time and space.”

According to curator Flores, “The exhibition centers on the sprawling practice of Sakuliu. It surveys its many lively forms that offer both an inspiring indigenous cosmology and an urgent everyday life. Sakuliu’s knowledge of the Paiwan lifeworld as a doer and a thinker intertwines with his sense of responsibility as a citizen-artist. This knowledge produces a contemporary expression rooted in a vast Austronesian ecology and speaking to common interests within Taiwan and across the world.”

Dutch Entry 59th Venice Biennale

Artist: Melanie Bonajo
Curatorial team: Maaike Gouwenberg, Geir Haraldseth and Soraya Pol
Commissioned by Mondriaan Fund
Location Dutch pavilion: Chiesetta della Misericordia in Venice

The artist selected to represent the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale in 2022 is Melanie Bonajo. A broad-based international jury selected Bonajo from a long list of artists and curators who had applied to take part in earlier versions of the biennale. Those selected were invited to submit an overall plan within a short space of time. A month later, these plans were presented to the jury, which was unanimous in determining that Melanie Bonajo would be representing the Netherlands. Bonajo will be working with a curatorial team consisting of Maaike Gouwenberg, Geir Haraldseth and Soraya Pol. Bonajo’s work will be presented at the Chiesetta della Misericordia in the Cannaregio neighbourhood in Venice.

Members of the jury for the Dutch contribution to the 2022 Venice Biennale are: Kate Bush (curator Tate Modern), Stijn Huijts (director Bonnefantenmuseum), Hicham Khalidi (director Jan van Eyck Academy), Franziska Nori (director Frankfurter Kunstverein), Ugochukwu-Smooth Nzewi (curator MoMA – Museum of Modern Art, New York), Fatos Üstek (director Liverpool Biennale), Rieke Vos (curator Het HEM), and non-voting chairperson Eelco van der Lingen (director Mondriaan Fund).

For the 59th Venice Biennale, Bonajo will produce a new film, which will be presented together with a publication in an extensive, wide-ranging setting. Quoting from the plan for the project:

‘In Venice, Bonajo takes charge of the [human] body and hauls it up out of the claws of capitalism. Mel* absorbs you into The New Intimacy Movement. She challenges you to recognize and explore the body anew, as a means of connection, intimacy, touch and safety. You are swept along in adventures that stimulate all the senses: feeling is a form of intelligence, thinking through touch.’

Location of the Dutch pavilion in 2022

The Mondriaan Fund recently announced that the Dutch presentation for the 59th Venice Biennale would take place at a new location in the city. From among a number of options, Melanie Bonajo selected the Chiesetta della Misericordia, a deconsecrated 13th-century church. Director Eelco van der Lingen is delighted:

‘An exciting artist in an exciting location. The Chiesetta della Misericordia is a splendid building in the middle of the city. I am looking forward to seeing how that relates to the splendid work of Melanie Bonajo.’

For 2022, the Mondriaan Fund wants the Dutch presentation to take place outside the Rietveld Pavilion and the Giardini. Van der Lingen hopes to establish a new point of reference for the future. ‘For us, it is good to step out of our comfort zone and take a look around at what freedoms being outside the walls of the pavilion can generate. This also offers the Dutch contribution the opportunity to conceive a plan that does not have to take Rietveld, the pavilion, or the Giardini into account.’ The Mondriaan Fund has meanwhile invited Estonia to make use of the Rietveld Pavilion for the 2022 Venice Biennale.
