Simon Starling, An installation for two publishers, Three Star Books and Westreich Wagner Publications

As a sequel to Rirkrit Tiravanija's presentation two years ago, Simon Starling will create a site-specific installation in the windows of the Gallery of Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa (San Marco Square), featuring two notable publishers of artists' books, Three Star Books and Westreich Wagner Publications. 

Starling will place four books by the two publishers in the windows of Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa, treating the objects as if they were coveted goods not dissimilar to the luxury products on display throughout the same neighborhood in San Marco. 

One book is featured in each vitrine of the gallery, and is presented in the center of the blackened window in a box lined with black velvet. The windows are delicately ornamented with gold leaf symbols - all common notations of printing and text - which are applied with a nonchalance that questions their actual materiality. 

The object in quotation marks, or being pointed to, is in fact a highly crafted and carefully conceived work of art, which is more sculpture than book. And it is this play between media, communication, representation and the object itself to which Starling points, subtly referencing Italian signage traditions at the same time.

Dando un seguito all'installazione curata da Rirkrit Tiravanija due anni fa, Simon Starling realizzerà nelle vetrine della Galleria di Piazza San Marco della Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, un'installazione site-specific per due importanti editori di libri d'artista, Three Star Books e Westreich Wagner Publications.Starling disporrà quattro libri degli editori nello spazio delle vetrine della Galleria, trattando i volumi in modo non dissimile dai prodotti di lusso presenti in quell'angolo del sestiere San Marco.

Un libro verrà esposto al centro di ogni vetrina, parzialmente oscurata per l'occasione, in una scatola foderata di velluto nero. Il vetro sarà ornato con simboli in foglia d'oro, comuni segni di interpunzione in testo e stampa, qui usati con nonchalance, quasi a mettere in discussione l'effettiva materialità dei volumi.

L'oggetto tra virgolette, o indicato, è infatti un'opera d'arte sapientemente manufatta e concepita, quasi più scultura che libro. Ed è proprio a questo gioco tra media, comunicazione, rappresentazione e oggettualità che punta Starling, allo stesso tempo strizzando l'occhio alle insegne della tradizione italiana.
