Arte aborigena alla Biennale

A group of NSW Regional Aboriginal artists will make their international debut at this years’ Venice Biennale as contributors to a project entitled ‘Country’.

‘Country’ is a collaboration between Aboriginal artists from different regions of Australia and Italian artist and curator Giorgia Severi. The project spans NSW, NT and WA and will culminate in an installation at the Venice Biennale in May 2015.  The installation will include visual artworks, weaving and sound recordings, all thematically linked by the idea of connections with earth and culture.

The Venice Biennale is the oldest and most prestigious exhibition of international contemporary art and an important platform for countries to affirm their artistic and cultural identities. Being invited to attend this event is a huge milestone for aboriginal art from Regional NSW, which has historically been under represented.

Two out of the four collective artworks in ‘Country’ are from Regional NSW and were created by Outback Arts and Galamban Artists.

Curated by artist and Regional Arts Development Officer Jamie-Lea Hodges, the Outback Arts work was made by over 20 artists from the region. It is a 14 meter long handmade string crafted from Australian grasses, seeds, native feathers and contemporary materials.

Georgia Severi has worked closely with Galamban artists Clive and Markeeta Freeman, to include Jervis Bay as one of the contributing NSW regions. The collaboration is a multimedia artwork, using images, possum skins and carved tree shields.

Both artworks are thematically linked through their exploration of the connections between traditional and contemporary practices of art and culture.

Supported by Arts NSW and Australia Council, Jamie-Lea and Clive will be attending the Venice Biennale for the installation of the exhibition and official opening events.
