PERFORMANCES: THIS IS NOT A DRILL by Latai Taumoepeau at 3pm on both Wednesday 17 April and Friday 19 April
IN CONVERSATION: Wednesday 17 April, 4pm 'Deep Dive into the Moana', with Taloi Havini and Latai Taumoepeau
Ocean Space brings together new commissions by indigenous pacific artist Latai Taumoepeau and architect Elisapeta Hinemoa Heta to explore how indigenous communities in the Pacific Islands are on the frontline of major environmental concerns. Curated by Taloi Havini, recent winner of the 2024 Artes Mundi Prize, the exhibition spans performance, sculpture, poetry and movement. The new choral work and participatory installation by Latai Taumoepeau grounded in Tongan philosophies is focused on giving voice to Pacific Islanders in the resistance to deep sea mining; and a new multi-sensory installation, The Body of Wainuiātea, by Wāhine architect Elisapeta Heta which provides a space embodying ritual and ceremony guided by the Māori concept of tikanga from her ancestral lands of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
