Dineo Seshee Bopape (South Africa) receives the Future Generation Art Prize 2017 

Phoebe Boswell (Kenya / United Kingdom) receives Special Prize 

Dineo Seshee Bopape (South Africa) is the recipient of the Future Generation Art Prize 2017, the fourth edition of the first ever global art prize for artists under 35, founded by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation. The winner was announced by the international jury at the award ceremony in the PinchukArtCentre, Kiev, Ukraine on March 16. Dineo Seshee Bopape received a total of 100,000 USD: 60,000 USD as a cash award, and 40,000 USD towards the production of a new work.

An additional 20,000 USD was allocated to fund artist-in-residency programmes for the Special Prize winner Phoebe Boswell (Kenya / United Kingdom). 

The winners were chosen by a distinguished international jury consisting of Nicholas Baume, Director and Chief Curator, Public Art Fund, New York; Iwona Blazwick, Director, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; Björn Geldhof, Artistic Director, PinchukArtCentre, Kiev and YARAT, Baku; Mami Kataoka, Chief Curator, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo and Curator, 21st Biennale of Sydney 2018; Koyo Kouoh, Founding Artistic Director, Raw Material Company, Dakar; Jochen Volz, curator of the 32nd São Paulo Biennial and General director of Pinacoteca, São Paulo, Brazil; Jérôme Sans, Co-Founder, Palais de Tokyo Paris and Artistic Director, Perfect Crossovers, Paris-Beijing.

Addressing the young artists Victor Pinchuk, founder of the Future Generation Art Prize said: “Contemporary art is the space of freedom. It lets you be free. It even forces you to open up. This is so important. People in many countries are afraid. Politicians use this. Nations speak the language of threats. Contemporary art is the antidote. I am really proud to be together with the 21 most energetic young artists here today and we can confirm that Ukraine is still a very modern country, a hub for contemporary art in the world. Together we create this energy of freedom here in Ukraine for the world.”

The shortlisted artists and winners will take part in the Future Generation Art Prize@Venice group exhibition organised by the PinchukArtCentre as a Collateral Event of the 2017 Venice Biennale. As the winner of the Future Generation Art Prize 2017, Dineo Seshee Bopape will present her solo show at the PinchukArtCentre in Kiev, in 2018.  

Introducing Dineo Seshee Bopape, the winner of the Future Generation Art Prize 2017, the jury stated: “An earth sculpture made of rich black local soil acts as a platform for objects, organic forms and geological fragments that represent actions and symbols. The artist creates ceramic hand casts that express gestures of labor and of protest. Her arrangements of minerals, stones and gold leaf suggest forms of extraction. The work is a metaphor for the land and for landlessness; for wealth and poverty; for new life and mourning. Burnt herbs and crystals act as agents of healing for a young artist who lives and works in Post-Apartheid South Africa. In recognition of her formal innovation and political symbolism, we are delighted to award the 2017 Future Generation Art Prize to Dineo Seshee Bopape.”

Commenting on works by the Special Prize winner Phoebe Boswell the jury said: “In this exhibition we encounter a corridor of virtuoso life drawings, female figures, animated on an epic scale. These naked yet heroic protagonists have stories to tell and they are activated by our presence—we are also invited to contribute our own thoughts and statements. In recognition of the immersive and emotionally charged power of the installation titled Mutumia, a special prize is awarded to Phoebe Boswell.”

The exhibition of the 21 shortlisted artists for the fourth edition of the Future Generation Art Prize is on show at the PinchukArtCentre, Kiev, Ukraine until April 16. The Future Generation Art Prize 2017 exhibition is curated by Anna Smolak.

The shortlisted artists were chosen by an international Selection Committee. The Open Group from Ukraine were nominated for the shortlist as winners of the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2015, a national contemporary art prize awarded to young Ukrainian artists up to the age of 35.

Daniela Castro, Chair of the Selection Committee, said: "The selection committee assessed a pool of thousands of applications submitted by young artists from all over the world. The difficulty of selecting just twenty practices from this list was not just because of the amount of work entailed in such an endeavor but by the excellence of each project we had to carefully look at. Merit was one of the many variants we considered in order to conduct a fair analysis: geography, gender, media also had their say. As such, we understand that the shortlisted artists for the Future Generation Art Prize are representatives of a wider landscape of outstanding art practices emerging throughout the world.”

The Future Generation Art Prize established by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation in 2009 is a worldwide contemporary art prize created to discover, recognise and give long-term support to a future generation of artists. Judged by a distinguished jury, the Prize with a cash value of $100,000, aims to make a major contribution to the careers of younger artists involved in the dynamic cultural development of societies in transition, many of whom have found it difficult to get their voices heard. The competition is open to all artists up to the age of 35 of all backgrounds, working in any medium, anywhere in the world. 

An exhibition of the work of the twenty one shortlisted artists will go on show at the PinchukArtCentre in Kyiv on 25 February – 16 April 2017. The winner will be announced at an Award Ceremony in Kyiv in March. The exhibition will be presented as an official collateral event at the Palazzo Contarini Polignac Venice Biennale opening on Thursday 11 May 2017.

About the Future Generation Art Prize

All artists up to the age of 35 of all backgrounds, working in any medium, anywhere in the world are encouraged to apply for the Future Generation Art Prize. Supporting the application process, more than 600 correspondents all over the world nominate artists for the prize and over 50 Partner Platforms worldwide are ambassadors for the Prize to encourage artists within their regions to apply.

The main prize will be awarded by an international jury in the amount of US$ 100,000, split between $60,000 in cash and $40,000 investment in the production of a new work. In addition US$ 20,000 will be awarded to up to five Special Prize winners, nominated by the Jury. A Public Choice winner will be selected through online voting and announced at the Award Ceremony.

Ukraine at the 56th International Art Exposition

PinchukArtCentre to Present Ukraine at the 56th International Art Exposition la Biennale di Venezia with a Group Exhibition Featuring Young Ukrainian Artists

The Ukrainian national pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia will be organized by the PinchukArtCentre with the support of the Victor Pinchuk Foundation.  Ukraine will present a group exhibition featuring a young generation of Ukrainian artists, including Yevgenia Belorusets, Nikita Kadan, Zhanna Kadyrova, Mykola Ridnyi & Serhiy Zhadan, Artem Volokitin, Anna Zvyagintseva and Open Group. The commissioner of the pavilion is the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. Björn Geldhof, Deputy Artistic Director, PinchukArtCentre, is the curator of the project.

The Ukrainian national pavilion will be located at the temporal glass construction on the Riva dei Sette Martiri, on the main walking passway from Arsenale to Giardini. It stands as a model for a new, transparent Ukraine reaching out to the world. With this exhibition a young generation of artists voices hopes for Ukraine’s future through a deeply personal commitment and solidarity with those involved in the war.

Official press-preview of the Ukrainian national pavilion will take place on May 7, 2015 from 09:30 till 12:00 (CET).

The PinchukArtCentre had represented Ukraine in 2007 and 2009 at the 52nd and 53rd International Art Exhibitions - la Biennale di Venezia, organizing the Ukrainian national pavilions, as well as with Future Generation Art Prize@Venice exhibitions in 2011 and 2013 as part of the Collateral events.

The 56th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia, entitled “All the World’s Futures”, will run from 9 May to 22 November 2015. It will take place in the institutional venues of the Giardini della Biennale and the Arsenale, with extensions in other venues in the City of Venice. Paolo Baratta is the President and Okwui Enwezor is a curator of la Biennale di Venezia in 2015. The 56th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia will also present, as is traditional, the National Participations with their own exhibitions in the Pavilions at the Giardini and at the Arsenale, and in the historic city centre of Venice.

This edition will also include selected Collateral Events, presented by international entities and institutions, which will present their exhibitions and initiatives in Venice concurrently with the 56th Exhibition.

The preview of the 56th International Art Exhibition will take place on May 6th, 7th, 8th 2015.
