even more Friends

Meetings on Art

Organizzazione artistica Aaron Cezar.

Clandestine Talks – Lara Favaretto

Bivacco

IT

EN

In 2019 will be celebrated the centennial of the signing of the Treaty of Saint-Germain, which divided Tyrol and assigned South Tyrol to Italy. In this occasion, this bivouac is brought to San Servolo: an original high mountain emergency shelter
transported to the venetian lagoon, and will exhibit the works of seven artists from south Tyrol in the occasion of the Venice Biennale of Art.

The bivouac represents this ideal of an open and cross-border place of the Alpine regions, where the ideals of peace and coexistence are exercised daily and fed in an exemplary way. The bivouac is therefore not only a close reference to the Alpine morphology, but it wants to be an allegory of a land of passage and exchange, and also of welcoming over the borders. A small Europe in this restless Europe that rediscovers nationalism and questions its future. The curatorial concept has brought the artists to interpret through their works, the dual conceptual level of „Bivouac“. The first is the „physical“ level, with works designed to interact with its minimal architecture and limited space. The second is the „evocative“ level, meaning an intimate place for meditation, but also a shelter, always open for encounters, interaction, cultural contamination.

A catalogue with texts by Roberto De Martin, Hannes Egger, Hannes Obermair, Maxi Obexer and Christiane Rekade as well as Patrizia Spadafora completes the artistic project.

Young Artisti

YOUNG ARTIST IN THE HOTEL
ISOLA DI SAN SERVOLO │ VENEZIA │ 10 MAGGIO – 24 NOVEMBRE 2019

VERNICE 10 MAGGIO │ H. 17.00

YOUNG ARTIST IN THE HOTEL
SAN SERVOLO ISLAND │ VENICE │ 10 MAY – 24 NOVEMBER 2019

VERNICE 10 MAY │ H. 5.00 P.M.

YAG/garage art gallery in Pescara (Italy), in partnership with San Servolo Servizi, presents YOUNG ARTIST IN THE HOTEL, a project with the aim to offer to six artists of the gallery the opportunity to exhibit in the prestigious spaces of San Servolo.
On the occasion of the Biennale Architettura 2018, San Servolo Servizi, with the Venice Innovation Design initiative, entrusted the task of restyling six rooms, reception and other spaces of the structure to important companies dealing with furniture and design.
This year, for the 58th International Art Exhibition six YAG/garage artists, Dario Agati, Martina Cioffi, Daniele Di Girolamo, Matteo Messori, Marco Smacchia and Manuel Tatasciore will exhibit one of their works inside each of the San Servolo restyled rooms both for making them more esclusive that for allowing guests who will occupy these rooms to have the opportunity to privately appreciate the beauty and the value of these artworks.
At the same time, in the San Servolo cafeteria, other works of the same artists with almost the same subjects of those exhibited in the rooms, will be shown to the public with the possibility of being bought.
The project is curated by Ivan D’Alberto, art director YAG/garage and the exhibition has been made possible thanks to Silvio Maresca, sole director Carlo Maresca SpA.

The exhibition opens 10 May 2019 at 5.00 p.m. with guided tour.

Magmatism Pic-Nic at Pavilion 02 / Venice

At the former Chiesa dei Santi Cosma e Damiano occupied by Pavilion 02 in GAD - Giudecca Art District Magmatism team will activate the courtyard space with video screenings, performances presentations and sheer human engagement. It will be unique occasion to get involved with Magmatism Movement – a project that we had been developing this year that focuses on unknown and inexplicable rythms of culture masses under the metaphor of the processes of magma flow in Earth crust. Magmatism is a living, moving and eruptive thing that you have yet to witness.

With Pic-Nic at Pavilion 02 Magmatism wants to introduce new curatorial perspective on how art functions in current time. We strive to bring up contexts that in relation to global, white, western, heteronormative art world can be perceived borderline or completely outside.

For Magmatism Pic-Nic we have selected works and artists that represent this certain kind of nonconformity, their sense of belonging is somewhat skewed, normal yet liminal.

SUNSET VIDEO
On the evening of the 9th of May we will host Sunset Video – a consecutive presentation of various video works that reflect on sense of singular sense of not belonging. Sunset Video will be accompanied by various leisure activities, Pavilion 02 tour and networking session.

PERFORMATIVE BREAKFAST
On the morning of 10th of May Performative Breakfast will be held at the Pavilion 02 courtyard. Invited atists will perform, talk, make statements and once again activate the space of the courtyard with the body and mind.

Jean Dubuffet a Venezia

A strong relationship connects one of the most important French artists of the postwar period, Jean Dubuffet, to the city of Venice. This show, curated by Sophie Webel and Frédéric Jaeger, intends to celebrate and remember the importance of two famous exhibitions that, taking place in Venice, marked the path of the artist. Dubuffet chose Venice twice in order to present his more recent works for the first time: at Palazzo Grassi in 1964 and at the French Pavilion at Biennale of 1984. The exhibition is hosted in the large rooms of the main floor of Palazzo Franchetti, a prestigious Fifteenth Century palace overlooking the Canal Grande, and it is organized by ACP, the company managing the exhibition venue, with the valuable collaboration of the Dubuffet Foundation.

Through the recall of the two historical venetian exhibitions mentioned above, the show at Palazzo Franchetti presents the three most important series of Dubuffet's work: from the Célébration du solto to Hourloupe and then Mires

The first series dates back to the Fifties when Dubuffet increases his researches about the endless possibilities of the matter. Matériologies and Texturologies belongs to this group. Hourloupe is the core of Dubuffet's research "that guided his previous and following production" as stated by Daniel Abadie. The artist worked on this series between 1962 and 1974 and presented it for the first time at Palazzo Grassi in 1974.

With approximately twenty selected works, this section explores the questioning of the normal perception of the real world using fluid lines constantly changing in viewer's look. His art is crowded, emotionally charged, almost loud, as the word itself "Hourloupe" means (from the French word tourlouper, "to deceive") and capable of creating a brand new universe that penetrates reality. Some interesting sculptures belong to this particular series, as the monumental work placed in the Palace's garden, a rare green space in Venice's heart facing directly the Canal Grande, close to the Academy Bridge.

The exhibition is completed by about fifteen works of Mires, a 1980's series, characterized by vibrant colours and flowing brushstrokes that break the painting's physical limits. These are the works chosen by the artist to officially represent his birth country at the Venice Biennale in 1984. The exhibition is enriched by a chosen selection of drawings, gouaches and documents related to 1964 and 1984's shows and by photographies, letters and articles that witness also the artist's musical experiments.

Therefore this exhibition gives a complete portrait of a real experimenter who had the courage to diverge from traditions perceived as dry and limiting, turning to an emotional and psychological use of painting.

Olaf Nicolai — News Cuts

News Cuts brings together twenty-two images selected from Olaf Nicolai’s personal archive of newspaper clippings. Each image is accompanied by a collage of quotes compiled from different kinds of sources, evoking new framings of the given image through this index and its composition of variant historical, socio-political as well as poetic connotations.

A first version of News Cuts was published on the occasion of the exhibition There Is No Place Before Arrival at Kunsthalle Wien (July 13 – October 7 2018) curated by Luca Lo Pinto, in which these 22 images were translated into enlarged chalk floor paintings, which the visitors were able to walk over and around.

Over the course of the exhibition, the installation not only gradually changed and slowly vanished, but was also activated by writers, dancers, choreographers, musicians, artists and performers invited to respond to this painted „plateau” and its individual images, especially referring to the collages of texts given by the index.

Frank Auerbach: From Drawing to Painting

(ENGLISH TEXT BELOW)

ALMA ZEVI è lieta di annunciare 'Frank Auerbach: From Drawing to Painting', la prima mostra personale dedicata all’artista in Italia negli ultimi trent’anni.

ENGLISH TEXT

ALMA ZEVI is delighted to announce 'Frank Auerbach: From Drawing to Painting', the artist’s first solo exhibition in Italy in over thirty years. Widely regarded as Britain’s greatest living artist, Auerbach (b. 1931, Berlin), was last shown in Italy when he represented Great Britain in the 1986 Venice Biennale, winning the prestigious Golden Lion prize.

The exhibition includes an oil painting which has never been publicly displayed in Italy before, as well as drawings, many of which have left the artist’s studio for the first time. It focuses on an international contextualisation for a group of artists living in Post-War London. Auerbach was one of the key figures of this highly influential and radical group, together with his colleagues and friends including Michael Andrews, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, R.B Kitaj and Leon Kossoff.

All the works in the exhibition depict urban landscapes of London, shining light on Auerbach’s sensitive and dynamic portrait of a city in a state of flux since he was sent by his parents from Germany in 1939, at the age of 8. In the 1950s, fresh out of art school, he began painting the ruins of London after The Blitz. This led to the artist’s fascination with cityscapes, which is conveyed in all of the works on view.

The gallery will present a group of ten new works on paper, all entitled "Study for ‘From the Studio’," which were completed at the end of 2018, showing the immediate vicinity of the artist’s studio. These drawings illustrate Auerbach’s distinctive mark-making, where individual lines build into dynamic and complex compositions. These gestures, which extend beyond the edges of the paper, have a colour palette of extraordinary range and vibrancy. Whilst his painting technique is a series of additions and subtractions, with the artist scraping down and reapplying layers of paint, the drawings have a consistent tension of building up these layers, culminating in highly expressive and resolved works.

From Johannes Vermeer to Vincent Van Gogh, the artist painting their studio remains one of the most intriguing motifs in the Western canon. Here, the alchemic ‘moment of creation’ – typically a private process – is recorded. Auerbach’s decision to paint the exterior of his studio (rather than the interior) is a bold and characteristically enigmatic choice, revealing little about the functioning part of the studio. By refusing to reveal his surroundings, Auerbach ensures the focus remains on the practice itself. The key to understanding his work can be deciphered in the image that we look at.

In addition to the group of new drawings, ALMA ZEVI will display several other works on paper from the past five decades, which expand our understanding of the artist. The evolution of the drawings is cyclical, with the artist returning to the same locations year after year. The most iconic of these vistas include Primrose Hill, Mornington Crescent and Hampstead Road. These locations lie within walking distance from Auerbach’s studio in Camden Town, North London, where he has worked since 1954. Until recently, the artist would walk outside and draw every morning.

This exhibition includes a remarkable Auerbach painting from 2006-2007. When shown together with the group of drawings, it offers viewers a rare opportunity to understand the artist’s working method of creating drawings and paintings in tandem. "Tower Blocks: Hampstead Road" demonstrates Auerbach’s long-standing interest in the regeneration of Post-War London, which began in his early paintings from the 1950s of building sites; the theme of a major show of the artist’s work at The Courtauld Gallery, London, in 2009. Representing the cyclical nature of London’s development, the bright colours and inherent warmth of the Brutalist Tower Blocks show the artist’s familiarity with his subject matter and the architecture of the city. By including a street sign – a rarity, as Auerbach very seldomly uses text – the viewer is provided with an insight into the daily routine of this preeminent artist.

The exhibition traces the revolution that Auerbach ignited in the 1950s that saw a renewed interest in figurative and landscape painting. This paved the way for younger generations of artists who continue to cite his work as a fundamental point of reference and persevere in finding new ways to reinterpret the world around them.
