L’artista inglese Shezad Dawood presenta a Venezia, in occasione della 57. Biennale Arte, un nuovo articolato progetto espositivo in cui si mostra per la prima volta Leviathan, un film in dieci episodi ideato e diretto dall’artista.

A Venezia saranno svelati i primi due episodi del film insieme a una nuova serie di opere su tessuto e scultoree, nell’ambito di una mostra site-specific pensata per gli spazi restaurati, e per la prima volta aperti a un progetto artistico, della neorinascimentale Palazzina Canonica, lungo la Riva dei Sette Martiri, nei pressi dei Giardini della Biennale.

La mostra, a cura di Alfredo Cramerotti, si sviluppa con il supporto istituzionale della Fondazione Querini Stampalia e in stretta collaborazione con l’Istituto di Scienze Marine (CNR-ISMAR) e Fortuny.

Dopo Venezia, il progetto vedrà diverse tappe nel Regno Unito e altre sedi internazionali, fino alla presentazione finale del film nel 2020.

Leviathan è ambientato in un futuro immaginario, i cui abitanti sono i sopravvissuti a un cataclisma solare. Ogni episodio è raccontato dal punto di vista di uno dei personaggi, seguiti nel loro vagare tra Europa, Asia e Nord Africa, e nell’incontro con diverse comunità dal carattere idiosincratico.

Tra le location scelte dall’artista per le riprese si trovano la piattaforma oceanografica dell’Istituto di Scienze Marine, nel mare Adriatico, il Museo di Storia Naturale di Londra e un’isola abbandonata nella Laguna di Venezia.

Nel corso della preparazione del film Dawood ha scelto di confrontarsi con biologi marini, oceanografi, scienziati politici, neurologi e studiosi dei disturbi post traumatici, per indagare con il loro aiuto alcune delle questioni più critiche del nostro presente e le loro interconnessioni. Adottando un approccio globale e collettivo, Leviathan è una riflessione sulle possibili conseguenze della mancata consapevolezza dei rischi umanitari e climatici del nostro tempo, visti dall’artista come parti della stessa patologia della vita sulla Terra.

I primi due episodi saranno proiettati su due diversi schermi allestiti presso Palazzina Canonica, insieme all’installazione di una serie di dipinti su tessuto e di una scultura di grandi dimensioni. I lavori su tessuto sono stati realizzati in dialogo con l’eccellenza artigianale di Fortuny, utilizzando alcuni dei suoi preziosi manufatti tessili. I dipinti saranno allestiti sia lungo la libreria di Palazzina Canonica che nello showroom della fabbrica Fortuny alla Giudecca, nata nel 1919 e oggi ancora attiva.

Dawood sta inoltre lavorando a stretto contatto con il Labanof (Laboratorio di Antropologia e Odontologia Forense, Università degli Studi di Milano), istituto incaricato del riconoscimento degli effetti personali persi dai migranti nel viaggio verso Lampedusa, per contribuire all’identificazione dei dispersi da parte dei familiari. Proprio alcuni degli oggetti dell’archivio del Labanof saranno raffigurati nei nuovi dipinti su tessuto di Dawood.

Leviathan si svilupperà anche sotto forma di narrazione scritta, pubblicata anche in questo caso per episodi sul sito web del progetto.

L'opera "The Golden Tower" di James Lee Byars ideata per una mostra al Martin-Gropius-Bau di Berlino nel 1990 sarà proposta in Campo San Vio, vicino alla Fondazione Peggy Guggenheim, dal 13 Maggio al 26 Novembre in coincidenza con la Biennale di Venezia.

Ireland at Venice

Ireland at Venice, the national representation of Ireland at the Venice Biennale, will present Jesse Jones in 2017. 

Jesse Jones will consider the national pavilion as the site of an alternative Law. With a practice that is grounded in film and performance, Jones will create an artwork she describes as a ‘bewitching’ of the judicial system. 

Tremble Tremble will be presented in the Arsenale of La Biennale di Venezia from May – November 2017, with Commisisoner and Curator, Tessa Giblin. Its title is inspired by the 1970s Italian wages for housework movement, during which women chanted “Tremate, tremate, le streghe sono tornate! (Tremble, tremble, the witches have returned!)”. Jones’ new work emerges from a rising social movement in Ireland which calls for a transformation of the historic relationship between the church and the state. In this time of change, Jones proposes the return of the witch as a feminist archetype and disrupter who has the potential to transform reality. Tremble Tremble imagines a different legal order, one in which the multitude are bought together in a symbolic, gigantic body, to proclaim a new law, that of In Utera Gigantae. 

 Based in Dublin, Jones has been researching the ways in which the law transmits memory between generations and over time. Her research weaves between an archeological dig of a 3.5 million year old female specimen, to the suppressed voices of the witch trials of the 16th century Europe, the symphysiotomy trials, and abortion legislation in Ireland today. The new world order to be found in Tremble Tremble churns testimony, published statements and new lyrics into a towering bodily incantation. Jones is collaborating with theatre artist Olwen Fouéré, and sound artist Susan Stenger, who are together creating an artwork that extends across the pavilion as an expanded form of cinema. 

A book will be published in English and Italian, featuring writing by Silvia Federici, Tina Kinsella, Lisa Godson, and Tessa Giblin. Designed by Åbäke, with photography by Ros Kavanagh, Tremble Tremble / Tremate Tremate is co-published by Mousse Publishing and Project Arts Centre.

La Biennale dates to 1895, when the first International Art Exhibition was organized. It is one of the most important international biennials and cultural institutions in the world, introducing more than half a million visitors to exciting new art every two years. The 57th Biennale di Venezia will open to the public on Saturday, May 13th and extend until November 26th, 2017. The Press and Professional Previews will take place on May 10th, 11th and 12th. It is an unparalleled meeting point for art professionals from around the world, and provides an extraordinary potential for professional encounters – at the Vernissage, and then the following 7 months when over 500,000 visitors pass through its halls. It is a world-wide cultural event that attracts a varied international public throughout a 7-month exhibition period, an average of 2,550 visitors daily. 

 The Pavilion of Ireland will be in le Artiglierie dell’Arsenale, in the heart of La Biennale di Venezia. The ancient warehouses of Venice’s ammunitions holdings will be transformed, and benefit from the large footfall that characterises the main site of the Biennale.

Zai Kuning at Singapore

Multidisciplinary artist Zai Kuning will represent Singapore at the 2017 Venice Biennale from 13 May to 26 November 2017, as announced by the National Arts Council, Singapore. Dapunta Hyang: Transmission of Knowledge is a culmination of over 20 years of Zai’s research on Malay culture and history in Southeast Asia.  Having spent more than a decade with, and creating work on the orang laut (sea people) of the Riau Archipelago – the pre-nation and pre-colonial inhabitants of both island and sea in the region – Zai’s experiences have significantly fed into his broader inquiry on identity.  He has come to intimately know the harsh conditions in which they live: their customs, practices and beliefs; and as a people marginalised and discriminated against.

The exhibition for the Biennale builds upon a recent series that takes Dapunta Hyang Sri Jayanasa, the first Maharaja of the early kingdom of Śrīvijaya, as its vantage point. The success and influence of the empire is captured within Zai’s work through the symbol of the voyage, which is central to the exhibition.  Dapunta Hyang: Transmission of Knowledge is thus a starting point in which to engage with this history and knowledge, going back in time to the seventh century.  Through this, we can gain a better understanding of what and who we are, and the actions and even accidents that brought us here.

As the first artist to revive the mystical story of Dapunta Hyang, Zai calls forth the grandeur and sheer force of a maritime world that has been cast in darkness for centuries.  The project is not a presentation of history through material and object, nor is it about ideology or politics – it is instead, about a sense of fellowship and solidarity that arises from understanding our history and knowing who we are. 

Viewers will have the opportunity to reflect upon elements that the work combines: a ship made of rattan, strings and wax, carrying within its hull ghosts of the past, even as it unloads its sealed books in the present. On a facing wall, running parallel to the ship’s belly, photographic portraits of living mak yong performers will hang. Mak yong – a pre-Islamic operatic tradition among fisherman that was once widespread across Dapunta Hyang’s lands – is on the brink of disappearing, sustained only by a few remaining masters. In the background, the audience will hear an acoustic recording of the faint voice of a mak yong master, speaking a language few still understand. 

Through the synthesis of Dapunta Hyang, mak yong and orang laut, Zai communicates the urgent need to resurface questions on the transmission of identity, culture and history in Southeast Asia.

L'artista Reza Aramesh sarà proposto nel padiglione dell'Iran. 

Reza Aramesh was born in Iran, and has lived abroad since he was a teenager. He completed an MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths University, London in 1997. He has exhibited worldwide including UK, France, China, USA, Dubai and Israel. He has orchestrated a number of performances and exhibitions in established institutions including the Barbican Centre, Tate Britain and ICA, London. Moataz Mohamed Nasr Eldin per l'Egitto

Per l'Egitto ci sarà l'artista Moataz Mohamed Nasr Eldin con un progetto intitolato "The Mountain". 

Moataz Nasr was born in 1961 in Alexandria (Egypt). He lives and works in Cairo. After studying economics, he decided to change direction and take a studio in Old Cairo. This self-taught artist gained local recognition marked by many prizes before breaking into the international art scene in 2001, notably winning the Grand Prix at the 8th International Cairo Biennial. Since, he has participated in large international gatherings like the Venice, Seoul, Sao Paulo, Bogotà biennials and exhibited in prestigious contemporary art venues. The Aalto Natives

Artists Nathaniel Mellors (1974, UK) and Erkka Nissinen (1975, Finland) represent Finland at the 57th edition of Venice Biennale with The Aalto Natives.

Commissioned and produced by Frame Contemporary Art Finland, the exhibition is curated by Xander Karskens (1973, Netherlands), artistic director at Cobra Museum of Modern Art in Amstelveen.

Working collaboratively, the artists will transform the Pavilion of Finland – built in 1956 by architect Alvar Aalto – into an immersive, multimedia environment. The installation brings together sculptural elements, animatronics and video, which are synchronised in a dynamic choreography of dialogue and image. The exhibition focuses on various clichés surrounding Finnish history and national identity for The Aalto Natives. Taking cues from archaeology, anthropology and science fiction, short video vignettes at the core of the installation re-imagine Finnish society through the eyes of a pair of outsider figures, represented by talking animatronic puppets who, in dialogue, present a lecture. The animatronic puppets introduce a series of fast-paced video vignettes on Finnish mythology, contemporary Finnish society and their vision for the future of Finland.

Nissinen and Mellors are individually recognised for their absurd, irreverent and hilarious story-driven work; their humorous approach belies a profound understanding of contemporary issues of morality and communication. The artists met in Amsterdam during their Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten residency from 2007-8, and have been admirers of each other’s work since.

Nissinen and Mellors were selected through an Open Call process issued by Frame Contemporary Art Finland in 2016. The jury was impressed by the inventiveness of the proposal, its subversive humour, and the imaginative way it responded to the complex issue of nationhood and interdependence. “We selected the proposal because the ideas it presented were amongst the most captivating, surprising and artistically diverse. We are confident that it will generate debate and be a highly engaging experience for the audience.”
