CS

A Practice for Everyday Life, Londra.

Details of the Swiss Pavilion exhibition at the Biennale Arte 2022 revealed

For the Biennale Arte 2022, the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia appointed artist Latifa Echakhch to represent Switzerland. In collaboration with percussionist and composer Alexandre Babel and curator Francesco Stocchi, artist Latifa Echakhch conceived and realized the exhibition titled The Concert.

The exhibition plays with harmonies and dissonances, with the mixed feelings of expectation, fulfilment and disappearance. The sculptures are part of an orchestrated and enveloping experience, a rhythmic and spatial proposal that allows viewers to experience a fuller perception of time and of their own body.

Novità dal Padiglione UAE

The National Pavilion UAE’s upcoming exhibition at the Biennale Arte 2022 titled Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim: Between Sunrise and Sunset will present a new body of work for the National Pavilion UAE, an installation of human-sized, abstract and organic sculptural forms by veteran Emirati artist, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim. Curated by Maya Allison, the work draws from Ibrahim’s deep connection to the local environment of his hometown, Khor Fakkan – a city harbouring the rocky Al Hajar mountains on the east coast of the Emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

The 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia will be curated by New York based Italian curator and artistic director Cecilia Alemani under the theme, The Milk of Dreams, which questions the representation of bodies and their metamorphoses, and the connection between bodies and earth. In resonance with this theme Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim’s biomorphic sculptures cluster in undulating color and movement – suggesting bodies, mutation, and metamorphosis.

The exhibition marks Ibrahim and Allison’s fifth collaboration together and the third book that Allison has worked on that studies Ibrahim’s work. The exhibition’s accompanying publication, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim: Between Sunrise and Sunset / Works: 1986-2022, is the first monograph of Ibrahim’s work. It is co-edited by Maya Allison and Cristiana de Marchi and includes commissioned new texts that comprehensively explore Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim’s work, representing a major contribution to the UAE’s art history, documenting and archiving part of the country’s long-standing experimental art community.

Key dates - Biennale Arte 2022:
National Pavilion UAE’s exhibition inauguration: 20 April 2022 at 11 AM
Preview days: 20 – 22 April 2022
Public opening: 23 April – 27 November 2022

Passage, the National Pavilion UAE’s well-received exhibition at the 58th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia 2019, created by Nujoom Alghanem and curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, will be presented as part of Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Festival exhibition, Portrait of a Nation II, from 21st  January 2022 – 16th April 2022 at Manarat Al Saadiyat. This presentation follows the exhibition’s first show in the UAE at Abu Dhabi Art in November 2021.

Passage expands Alghanem’s experimentation with contemporary Arabic poetry through the language of film. Taking her quintessential 2009 poem, The Passerby Collects the Moonlight, as a point of departure, this installation explores the universal experience of displacement.

In "Oedipus In Search Of Colonus", Greek artist Loukia Alavanou translates the plot of Sophocles' last, nearly 2,500-year-old drama "Oedipus in Colonus" into the present in the form of a 360-degree VR film. The artist asked members from a Roma community living in a shantytown just outside modern-day Athens, to act out the plot of the ancient drama in this VR film. At the end of his life, Oedipus, infamous for his cruel deeds and expelled from the city of Thebes, comes to Colonus to die. For the first time he wants to defy the will of the gods who have determined his whole tragic destiny. Against their resistance, he chooses Colonus, a sacred place dedicated to the gods, to die.

Similarly, the Roma living today in the west of Athens, not far from the historical Colonus, revolt against their fate. For the often stateless nomads are denied the right to be buried in a cemetery near their last place of residence by the Greek authorities. A journey through time from Sophocles' two-and-a-half-thousand-year-old drama to the social ills of today, explicitly political and yet firmly anchored in the cultural history of the artists' homeland.

The exhibition is curated by Heinz Peter Schwerfel, a specialist in the art of the moving image.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST SHUBIGI RAO AND CURATOR UTE META BAUER TO REPRESENT SINGAPORE AT THE 59TH INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION OF LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA

Singapore to participate for the 10th time at the International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia following a one-year postponement due to COVID-19

First female artist-curator team to represent Singapore at the oldest and most prestigious International Art Exhibition

Singapore, 26 July 2021 – The National Arts Council, Singapore (NAC) is pleased to announce the appointment of artist Shubigi Rao and curator Ute Meta Bauer, as the artistic team for the Singapore Pavilion at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, from 23 April to 27 November 2022.

Shubigi Rao and Ute Meta Bauer were selected by a Commissioning Panel convened by NAC which comprised leaders in the local arts community. Following a rigorous nomination process, artists and curators go through a considered evaluation based on established criteria including the artistic strength and proposed vision for the showcase.

This year’s panel was led by Co-Chairs Rosa Daniel, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NAC, and Ahmad Mashadi, Head of NUS Museum. Ahmad Mashadi spoke of the recommendation, “The Commissioning Panel is convinced by the proposal presented by Shubigi Rao and Ute Meta Bauer, from its concepts to proposed articulations. It has a universal appeal and ability to connect with diverse cultural contexts, having been developed by the artist over her long practice across many locations. Both Rao and Bauer have exceptional records of practice one can describe to be global, but critically grounded to Singapore. Their approaches run alongside their capacities as educators, and we are confident that their efforts for the Biennale Arte can serve as a valuable reference to successive generations of artists and curators in Singapore. These are considerations that informed our recommendation for the artistic team.”

Commenting on the significance of this edition’s selection, Rosa Daniel (CEO of NAC) stated, “This is an exciting milestone for Singapore’s multicultural visual and literary arts scene. The pandemic has reminded us how art is essential to our wellbeing, and the news of the resumption of international biennales such as the International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia has been enthusiastically received by everyone in the arts community. NAC is committed to sustaining Singapore’s arts, and a key part of our plans has been to help our artists connect to the international scene and project a different side of Singapore on the global stage. As commissioner of the Singapore Pavilion at this international platform, the Council looks forward to celebrating the work of Singapore’s best with the rest of the contemporary art world.”

Shubigi Rao is an award-winning multidisciplinary Singaporean artist who has exhibited widely in international biennales and institutions around the world and won accolades for both her visual art practice and literary works. Rao has also been featured in March Meets 2019, 4th Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2018), 10th Taipei Biennial, (2016); 3rd Pune Biennale (2017), Digital Arts Festival, Copenhagen, Denmark (2013); and 2nd Singapore Biennale (2008). Most recently, she was invited to the upcoming 10th edition (2021/2022) of the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Australia. Rao is the curator of the upcoming 5th Kochi-Muziris Biennale, South Asia's biggest visual arts event.

As an artist, Rao’s films, art, texts, and photographs have critically, poetically and humorously engaged with systems of knowledge that structure our world. Since 2014, she has been visiting public and private collections, libraries and archives globally for Pulp: A Short Biography of the Banished Book, a decade-long film, book and visual art project about the history of book destruction. In 2020, the second book from the project won the Singapore Literature Prize (non-fiction), while the first volume was shortlisted in 2018. Both books have won numerous awards, including AIGA (New York)’s 50 best books of 2016 and 2019. The first exhibition of the project, Written in the Margins, won the APB Signature Prize 2018 Juror's Choice Award.

Ute Meta Bauer is the Founding Director of the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (CCA), a renowned institution in Southeast Asia that bridges academia and artistic research, and a professor at the Nanyang Technological University School of Art, Design and Media (NTU ADM). She has been a curator for three decades of numerous exhibitions on contemporary art, film, video, and sound, connecting artistic work with that of other disciplines. She was co-curator of documenta11 on the team of Okwui Enwezor (2001/2002) and the artistic director of the 3rd Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art (2004). She also co-directed the World Biennial Forum No. 1 in Gwangju, South Korea with Hou Hanru. She has been a commissioner of the Nordic Pavilion at the 50th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (2003), the commissioner/curator of the Norwegian contribution for the 26th São Paulo Biennial (2004), and co-curated with Paul Ha the US Pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (2015) which featured pre-eminent artist Joan Jonas, and was awarded a Honorary Mention for best National Pavilion by the Biennale’s International Jury.

The 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, The Milk of Dreams, is curated by Cecilia Alemani and runs from 23 April to 27 November 2022.  Following a one-year postponement of the Biennale Arte due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this announcement marks Singapore’s 10th participation in Venice commissioned by NAC. Since 2015, the pavilion has been located within the Arsenale and has featured artists such as Song-Ming Ang (2019), Zai Kuning (2017) and Charles Lim (2015). In 2009, Ming Wong’s representation of Singapore received a Special Mention at the 53rd International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

Art continues to provide solace during times of uncertainty. As the world gradually recovers from the pandemic, it becomes ever more important to care for societies through continued funding and support for the arts. Singapore’s participation in the 59th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia underscores this commitment by presenting Singapore arts internationally despite these challenging times.

The EDP Foundation will be the Main Patron of Portugal’s Official Representation at the 59th edition of the Venice Biennale, which will take place between 23 April and 27 November 2022.

Pedro Neves Marques is the artist selected to represent Portugal in Venice with the project “Vampires in Space” which, according to curators João Mourão and Luís Silva, will consist of “a narrative installation which will transform the second floor of Palazzo Franchetti, on the margins of the Venice Grand Canal, through a combination of films, poems and scenography inside an unexpected space ship inhabited by vampires”.

“Supporting the Portuguese representation at the Venice Biennale is consistent with one of the main pillars of the EDP Foundation’s activity: to promote Portuguese artists and their internationalization. In fact, it is within this context that the EDP Foundation will continue its cultural mission in 2022, by issuing the New Artists Award, patronizing several institutions and continuing to publish Electra magazine,” says Vera Pinto Pereira, President of the EDP Foundation.

The EDP Foundation supported the Portuguese Representation at the International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia for the first time in 2013, the year when Joana Vasconcelos – the first beneficiary of the EDP Foundation New Artists Award, in 2000 – presented the project “Trafaria Praia”. The EDP Foundation continued its support in 2015 and 2017, the years when Portugal presented the works “I Will Be Your Mirror” and “Medida Incerta” (“Uncertain Measure”), by artists João Louro and José Pedro Croft, respectively. The EDP Foundation also supported the 15th International Architecture Exhibition, which took place in 2016, in which Álvaro Siza Vieira represented Portugal with a social housing project for the Island of Giudecca, in Venice.

Kinerapan: Right of Crawling, il progetto di Taiwan

Taiwan’s Representation at the 59th Venice Biennale 2022 Kinerapan: Right of Crawling

Sakuliu Conveys Reflection on Interspecies Co-sharing and Coexistence

Taipei Fine Arts Museum, along with artist Sakuliu and curator Patrick Flores, have the pleasure to announce Kinerapan: Right of Crawling, the new project representing Taiwan at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022. Sakuliu will create a spiritual site which comprises several new works including sculpture, installation and animation that collectively tell a contemporary story through the traditional indigenous narrative.

Sakuliu was born in Sandimen Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan (Tavadran Village of the Paiwan people). Having grown up in a family of artisans, he has developed works encompassing such diverse forms as painting, sculpture, installation and architecture. Concerned that his traditional culture was being eroded or was even gradually disappearing, Sakuliu decided to actively sustain and revive it by documenting tribal wisdom in drawings and manuscripts, rebuilding stone slab houses, creating sculptures and leading ethnic awareness movements. His creative practice is rooted in engagement with everyday society, and his status as a well-rounded artist won him the National Culture and Arts Award in the fine arts category in 2018. He has recently concentrated on classical Paiwan philosophy, expressing his thought and research findings in both text and image form.

The exhibition title “Kinerapan” is a Paiwan word, which carries a wide range of meanings, from the plant crawling to scope, distance and depth, such as the area covered by a vast forest, the distance travelled by a river, or the space inhabited by a species. Broadly speaking, the word implies both abstract distance and temporal span, including the farthest that one’s imagination can reach. Also, in the development of the human being, the crawling stage is important in the struggle with gravity and in the beginning of exploring the world. The concept of “right” is centered on the quest for fairness and dignity. The exhibition is built upon two main ethical systems: the “Semiljeva” (Paiwan for joy of sharing and giving) and “Lingulj” (Paiwan for circle, emblematic of concentric, iterative giving) – to introduce a network of symbiosis and coexistence fostered by interspecies reciprocity and interdependence. Through representing the spatial order, belief and value system of the indigenous culture, the artist responds to the changing society as well as the conflicts, anxieties and tensions it has incurred over time.

For the exhibition, Sakuliu will use an artistic language informed by storytelling and imagination to guide the audience into a spiritual world that evokes contemporary reality and life. The artist projects his imagination through constructing a space symbolic of a family house that embodies Paiwan worldview: “What would it be like if the Earth were a stone-slab house and the planet’s entire population were my family? How should I envision such a more expansive space of Kinerapan and those inhabiting it?” When organic crops are exchanged into long-lasting inorganic currency, what is its effect on the concept of sharing? How does one judge the ownership of fruits if the plants have crawled into the neighbors’ fields? Starting from indigenous art, Sakuliu has always kept alert and sensitive to interactions between multiple cultural roots. His art practice has continuously translated the profound legacies of local wisdom and technology to meditate on cross-cultural issues in contemporary society and redistribute the indigenous genealogy across and into various historical contexts. Sakuliu states, “I use my personal understandings of space, land and ecology as my script and try to find a suitable way based on Paiwan cosmic view to convey, allowing knowledge to be transmitted across cultural differences as well as through time and space.”

According to curator Flores, “The exhibition centers on the sprawling practice of Sakuliu. It surveys its many lively forms that offer both an inspiring indigenous cosmology and an urgent everyday life. Sakuliu’s knowledge of the Paiwan lifeworld as a doer and a thinker intertwines with his sense of responsibility as a citizen-artist. This knowledge produces a contemporary expression rooted in a vast Austronesian ecology and speaking to common interests within Taiwan and across the world.”

Dutch Entry 59th Venice Biennale

Artist: Melanie Bonajo
Curatorial team: Maaike Gouwenberg, Geir Haraldseth and Soraya Pol
Commissioned by Mondriaan Fund
Location Dutch pavilion: Chiesetta della Misericordia in Venice

The artist selected to represent the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale in 2022 is Melanie Bonajo. A broad-based international jury selected Bonajo from a long list of artists and curators who had applied to take part in earlier versions of the biennale. Those selected were invited to submit an overall plan within a short space of time. A month later, these plans were presented to the jury, which was unanimous in determining that Melanie Bonajo would be representing the Netherlands. Bonajo will be working with a curatorial team consisting of Maaike Gouwenberg, Geir Haraldseth and Soraya Pol. Bonajo’s work will be presented at the Chiesetta della Misericordia in the Cannaregio neighbourhood in Venice.

Members of the jury for the Dutch contribution to the 2022 Venice Biennale are: Kate Bush (curator Tate Modern), Stijn Huijts (director Bonnefantenmuseum), Hicham Khalidi (director Jan van Eyck Academy), Franziska Nori (director Frankfurter Kunstverein), Ugochukwu-Smooth Nzewi (curator MoMA – Museum of Modern Art, New York), Fatos Üstek (director Liverpool Biennale), Rieke Vos (curator Het HEM), and non-voting chairperson Eelco van der Lingen (director Mondriaan Fund).

For the 59th Venice Biennale, Bonajo will produce a new film, which will be presented together with a publication in an extensive, wide-ranging setting. Quoting from the plan for the project:

‘In Venice, Bonajo takes charge of the [human] body and hauls it up out of the claws of capitalism. Mel* absorbs you into The New Intimacy Movement. She challenges you to recognize and explore the body anew, as a means of connection, intimacy, touch and safety. You are swept along in adventures that stimulate all the senses: feeling is a form of intelligence, thinking through touch.’

Location of the Dutch pavilion in 2022

The Mondriaan Fund recently announced that the Dutch presentation for the 59th Venice Biennale would take place at a new location in the city. From among a number of options, Melanie Bonajo selected the Chiesetta della Misericordia, a deconsecrated 13th-century church. Director Eelco van der Lingen is delighted:

‘An exciting artist in an exciting location. The Chiesetta della Misericordia is a splendid building in the middle of the city. I am looking forward to seeing how that relates to the splendid work of Melanie Bonajo.’

For 2022, the Mondriaan Fund wants the Dutch presentation to take place outside the Rietveld Pavilion and the Giardini. Van der Lingen hopes to establish a new point of reference for the future. ‘For us, it is good to step out of our comfort zone and take a look around at what freedoms being outside the walls of the pavilion can generate. This also offers the Dutch contribution the opportunity to conceive a plan that does not have to take Rietveld, the pavilion, or the Giardini into account.’ The Mondriaan Fund has meanwhile invited Estonia to make use of the Rietveld Pavilion for the 2022 Venice Biennale.

Małgorzata Mirga-Tas is a Polish-Romani visual artist, sculptor, painter, educator and activist. Born in 1978, she lives and works in Czarna Góra, a Romani village at the foot of the Tatra Mountains.

Małgorzata Mirga-Tas started her artistic career with sculpture, which she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Józef Sękowski. As a student, she developed a characteristic authorial sculptural technique using cardboard as the base material. She sculpted in the glued layers, using the pale brown colour of the material and the clear texture of the cardboard and glue. She gave form to the sculptures by cutting and modelling blocks of glued cardboard with a chain saw, grinder and drill and bracing them with metal and wooden supports. In this technique, she created semi-abstract and surreal depictions of animals, combining everyday life with the extraordinary, somewhat resemblant of the later hybrid-like creatures from Daniel Rycharski’s Rural Street Art. Her diploma work also included a Romani theme, which was later to become the leading theme of her art. Mirga-Tas comes from the Bergitka Roma tribe, which has the longest traditions of living in settlements, dating back to the pre-partition era. The artist herself also finally settled in her hometown of Czarna Góra, on the border of Spiš and Podhale.

Her 2004 diploma work titled Caravan is a slightly ornamented Romani caravan, fragile and somewhat melancholic. Although sculpted out of cardboard, it was still inspired by the visuality of the nomadic lifestyle of the Romani people, which was drastically transformed and regulated by their forced settlement in 1964. The artist’s newer works depict a world no longer clinging to the past known from Jerzy Ficowski’s texts but the lives of Romani communities in permanent settlements. They document both the changes and the longevity of social models developed over the centuries, with community activities not limited by the confines of four walls.

With time, cardboard sculptures began to give way to drawings and paintings in which the monochromaticity of cardboard was replaced by an explosion of colour and ornamentation. Decorative, almost purely ornamental compositions, with floral motifs were accompanied by equally decorative portraits in which human silhouettes melted together with ornaments. Finally, a narrative element appeared in her representations of members of Romani communities, and portraits of individuals replaced portraits of Romani communities.

In genre scenes, Mirga-Tas not only stayed true to her passion for decorativeness but even developed it, complicating the Baroque texture of the heavy paintings with patterned fabrics, sequins, feathers or playing cards. Thanks to them, the flat scenes built with clear contours gained optical depth and began to sparkle or almost vibrate in a slightly pop-art fashion. The fragments of fabrics used are not incidental – they often come from clothes once worn by people dear to the artist, such as family members and friends. What might seem to be a mere ornament adorning the depicted scene is therefore sometimes a most realistic and somewhat intimate element, not simply presented in the painting but transferred onto it directly from reality – like a woman’s skirt made of a piece of skirt actually worn by the portrayed.

Despite the decorativeness, the scenes presented by the artist are not idealised and romanticised but are firmly set in reality in almost a journalistic fashion. We see an old woman lost in thought and smoking a cigarette on the stairs to a house, a game of cards, the hanging up of laundry, sewing or chatting at the table. Apart from people, there are also many animals – hens walking around the courtyards, a goat sticking its head out from under the kitchen table. The apparent documentary style is accompanied by an element of creation, not only in synthesising and ornamenting scenes but also in combining characters who, for example, in reality, come from different neighbourhoods. In works made exclusively from stitched pieces of fabric, the figures of people and animals detach themselves from their surroundings and drift in the abstracted decorative space (where a rooster can outgrow a human in size) with no limitations.

Thus, the artist does not create a ‘sociological record’ in the style of Zofia Rydet; she does not catalogue all the elements of life and visual culture of Romani settlements but only provides us with selected snapshots observed from within the Romani community, combining realism with building an expressive visual dictionary of Romani culture. As she herself admits, at one point she was inspired by the so-called Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s. In Mirga-Tas’ works, one can also see a kinship with Kerry James Marshall’s contemporary painting, which in a similar way reclaims the visuality of Afro-American culture, liberated from the colonial gaze.

Greetings from Tarnów: From Factory Town to Humanopolis

A garden city, a city of the future and a city of death. Culture.pl presents a series of snapshots from the history of Tarnów, a city in southeastern Poland.

Mirga-Tas' strategy is a kind of insider ethnography that in its own way continues and responds to the work of her uncle Andrzej Mirga, an ethnographer who studied the Romani community from within. As the artist said 'he […] came from this world, spoke its language, visited places he knew well, where his family lived, photographed people who trusted him'. The photographs by Andrzej Mirga became the starting point for the exhibition The Right to Look at the Szara Kamienica Gallery in Kraków, curated by Wojciech Szymański and Delaine Le Bas. In her art, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas returns to the same neighbourhoods several decades later.

In addition to contemporary topics, Mirga-Tas’s work takes up one of the most important themes in the history of the Roma, although it is almost absent from the broader discourse – Porajmos (a term popularised by Ian Hancock meaning ‘the Devouring’), or the Romani Holocaust. In 2011, in Borzęcin Dolny, the artist created the wooden Monument to the Memory of the Holocaust of the Romani (Gypsies), with the silhouettes of a falling man and woman, to commemorate the local victims of Nazi crimes – the Romani people were one of the two ethnic groups, next to the Jews, designated by the Nazis for complete liquidation; according to estimates, the number of victims of the Porajmos may reach from two hundred thousand to half a million people. On the initiative of Adam Bartosz, the long-term director of the Tarnów District Museum and a researcher of Romani culture, the monument was erected in a forest, at the site where, in July 1942, the Nazis executed 29 Romani. The scale of the silence on the topic of the Romani victims of Nazism is attested to by the fact that this is the world’s first figural monument to commemorate the extermination. Anti-Romani prejudices became apparent when the monument was destroyed by unknown perpetrators in 2016. Soon, a copy was erected in the same place, while the artist kept the fragmented remains of the original as a separate work, involuntarily updated by the act of xenophobic vandalism.

Małgorzata Mirga-Tas is also active as an organiser, educator and activist. During her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, she joined the ‘Harangos’ Romani Educational Association, which is active in the education of Romani children and youth. Together with the photographer Marta Kotlarska, she has been implementing the project Romani Snap for several years, constituting workshops for children teaching them the pinhole photography technique. Together with two other artists from the Bergitka Roma – Bogumiła Delimata and Krzysztof Gil – she founded the Romani Art movement in 2007.

In the same year, the Roma Pavilion was included in the 52nd Venice Biennale, a major milestone in the struggle for the visibility of art created by Romani artists, which has existed in a kind of limbo for decades – breaking both from the tendencies that dominate the official narratives of contemporary art and from the ideas about folk art, and consequently ignored by researchers of both. Timea Junghaus, the curator of the first Roma Pavilion in Venice, wrote:

In the Footsteps of the Tatars: Poland's Only Muslim Minority

Legend has it that King Jan III Sobieski was so delighted with a Tatar cavalry captain’s service that he gave him as much land in Poland as he could travel around on horseback in one day. This is how Tatars ended up in Poland, in the eastern province of Podlasie.

The concept of Romani contemporary art is one of the greatest achievements of the Roma emancipation movement launched in Europe in the late 1960s. The movement was critical of the more than six-hundred-year-old practices which resulted in the Roma becoming victims of depictions created exclusively by non-Roma. The iconography of European art has thrown them, as ‘Gypsies’, into a conceptual ghetto – an imaginarium created on the basis of false premises and the same schemes – inhabited by wild people, criminals, welfare recipients, exotic prostitutes and beautiful children living in extreme poverty, yet happy.

The first Roma Pavilion was also unique because, unlike other pavilions that have made their debut in recent years, such as those dedicated to African countries, it went beyond the format of national representation shaped in the 19th century, in the ‘century of nations’ when the Biennale was founded.

Mirga-Tas is also the originator of the international open-air events called Jaw Dikh! (in English: 'come and see!') held in Czarna Góra between 2012 and 2016. The small mountain town was visited mainly, but not exclusively, by Romani artists, who had a chance to meet and connect with one another. The open-air workshops strengthening the transnational integration of Romani artists, although organised in inconspicuous circumstances, also played one of the key roles from the point of view of contemporary Roma art. In 2017, the artist also co-founded the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (Eriac) in Berlin.

29. Ćwiczenia Ceroplastyczne (29. Ceroplastic Exercises, 2020) is one of the most moving exhibitions created my Małgorzata Mirga-Tas. The artist created wax moulds of the monument figures and the remains of the damaged epitaph commemorating the extermination of the Romani people near Borzęcin Dolny. In the spring of 2016, perpetrators damaged the monument. Once again the Romani men and women were killed by Poles. The artist did not try to restore the original image of the monument or the sculptures, as she did before. What interested her was not a renewed commemoration of the concrete crime of the summer 1942 that occurred during the Samudaripen, but rather the commemoration of the very fact of destroying the monument, which was a sort of a symbolic murder as well as a historical reconstruction of the original crime. Thus the artist did not recombine the mutilated figures into a whole. Quite the opposite: she tended to the wounds, emphasizing their fragmentary character, fragility and precariousness of the remains. The material in which she moulded the remains is highly symbolic. Wax is a sculptural material ‘truer than the truth’ and since antiquity inseparably connected with veristic portrayal of the dead. At the same time, it is a material strongly featured in Romani culture, especially within the funeral and apotropaic practices; it was used for making magical sculptures presenting the corpse, devil and cross.

The exhibition Wyjście z Egiptu (Out of Egypt, 2021) organized by the Arsenal gallery in Bialystok comprised three series of works from the years 2016–2021. Two of them: Wesiune thana and 29 have been shown as part of collective and solo exhibitions at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko, and the Sądecki Ethnographic Park in Nowy Sącz. Out of Egypt – the third series and inspiration for the title labelling the entire exposition – is an all-new sequence of monumental collages created as bespoke pieces for the show.

Do You Need to be Christian to be Human?: An Interview with Mariusz Gałczyński on Multiculturalism

Never have Europeans discussed immigration so intensely as right now, as thousands of Syrian refugees wait at the borders for EU countries to decide their fate. Culture.pl spoke to Mariusz Gałczyński, an expert on multicultural education at Canada's McGill University, to discuss whether peaceful co-existence in culturally-diverse societies is possible.

All presented cycles explore themes typical for the artist’s entire oeuvre: the convoluted Roma and Roma-Polish identity, history of the Romani people, and transcultural and transnational experience of being a Roma. Concurrently, each of the series tells a different micro-story centered on an aspect essential from the artist’s vantage point. The Wesiune thana cycle deals with the issue of musealising Roma culture, and attempts at displaying it in the context of folk cultural heritage when the eponymous Out of Egypt refers to seventeenth-century etchings by printmaker Jacques Callot – scenes from the life of contem-poraneous Romani people.

Callot’s etchings known as La vie des Egyptiens (Life of the Egyptians) – and, therefore, the en-tire European iconographic tradition of presenting the Roma – have become a point of de-parture for Mirga-Tas’ new cycle of works. This goes to show that as early as in the 15th-century, artists had begun showing the Roma as a collective entity, Oriental-style. They were ethnographised, and duly construed as the Other of Europe. Combined with poverty, Oriental details in the attire were displayed as testimony to their non-European origin, well-deserved punishment of wandering travellers, and bitterness of having been banished from their homeland, likened with Egypt at the time. Other renderings were produced at the time, associating Egyptian-Gypsy garments with pursuits typical for the new arrivals. According to the collective portrait outlined in iconographic sources, the Roma were arrivals from the East, pickpockets, thieves, con-men, and ever so slightly bizarre vagrants and beggars. n a gesture of artistic appropriation, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas processes historical representations of the Romani people, all of which without exception – a fact of immense importance – created by non-Roma artists. Therefore, deprived of Roma self-portraits or narratives of how the Ro-mani people perceived themselves, the artists explores a retrospective and phantasmatic at-tempt at (re)creating and restituting the image. In an ironic reference to non-Roma visual tes-timonies of the past, she further proceeds to undermine stereotypes built over the years – metaphorically leaving Egypt.

Małgorzata Mirga-Tas combines various techniques to talk about identity and show the daily life of her community. The artist is the winner of Paszporty Polityki 2020 "for art that effectively, remarkably and wisely talks about identity and heritage. For the continued search of prevailing values and universals in Romani tradition."

The Disputed Origins of Poland's Smallest Ethnic Minority

346 – this is how many Karaites live in Poland according to the most recent census. They are by far the smallest of the four ethnic minorities established in Poland, but their culture is distinctive and should not be overlooked.

IGNASI ABALLÍ (Barcellona, 1958) vive e lavora a Barcellona.
