The Icelandic Art Center is delighted to announce that Reykjavik-based artist Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir will represent Iceland at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (20 April – 24 November 2024). She will collaborate with American curator Dan Byers to realise her presentation, which will be an exhibition of new sculptural and installation works. The Icelandic Pavilion will be located in the Artigliere in the Arsenale for the second time in 2024.

Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir is renowned for her nuanced artistic practice, which explores

concepts of beauty, utility, and value. The artist often uses and misuses the systems we  have developed to produce our material world. Her work draws inspiration from the affective possibilities of items such as computer buttons, plastic clips, hang tags, labels, and stickers presented at distorted scales and through often unnerving methods of display. The artist’s interventions into globalized systems of production, distribution, and commerce and the pleasure taken in the least heroic products of these systems, result in projects that are deadpan and surreal, playful and subversive. Working with Dan Byers, her presentation for the Icelandic Pavilion will respond to the Pavilion space and the Venice Biennale itself.

Dan Byers is a curator of contemporary art with a current focus on commissioning new work with living artists. Throughout his curatorial career, Byers has worked closely with artists to help conceptualize and produce new work for varying site and institutional contexts. In addition to his current post as the John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Director of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, he has held curatorial positions at the ICA/Boston, the Carnegie Museum of Art (where he was co-curator of the 2013 Carnegie International), and the Walker Art Center. Birgisdóttir and Byers share an interest in playing with the standard conventions of display and the exhibition format. They met through Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson and began conversations around Birgisdóttir’s Biennale presentation in 2022.

Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir, artist says ‘‘I look forward to taking my works to the Biennale and airing them out on the grand terrace of the art world. There will be a wall bound wall piece, among other scenarios. I’m excited to have Dan on my team, to make sense of it all.’

Dan Byers, curator, says “I’m delighted to work with Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir, The Venice Biennale is the perfect forum for Birgisdóttir’s aesthetically subversive and slyly political work. While still in its early stages, I’m excited by the way she is approaching the exhibition space, and the unexpected relationships she is creating between seemingly disparate sources and materials. I don’t think this pavilion will look or feel like any other.”

Iceland has exhibited at the Biennale Arte since the 1960s and has presented its own national pavilion since 1984. Previous presentations have recently included Sigurður Guðjónsson’s atmospheric audio-visual sculpture ‘Perceptual Motion’,  Shoplifter’s neon, hypernatural hair installation in 2019 and Egill Sæbjörnsson’s trolls in 2017. The Icelandic Pavilion is commissioned by the Icelandic Art Center, which promotes and supports Icelandic contemporary art internationally through grants, collaborations and projects.

A NYERTES PÁLYÁZAT
Nemes Márton a fiatal festőgeneráció egyik leginnovatívabb és legsikeresebb képviselője, aki műveiben a kép 21. századi újraértelmezésével kísérletezik a hagyományos festészet határait anyagban és térben kitágítva.
A Magyar Pavilon tereibe egy olyan multimédiás, több érzékre ható, a színeket középpontba helyező összművészeti alkotást tervezett, mely az absztrakt festészet hagyományain túl a kortárs élményvilágra, így a techno szubkultúra, a digitális képalkotás tapasztalataira épül. Munkáiban technikai eszközöket, ledpaneleket is beépít montázselemként.

CS

Upon recommendation by the jury, the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia has commissioned Swiss-Brazilian artist Guerreiro do Divino Amor to take over the Swiss Pavilion for the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. His monumental project "Super Superior Civilizations" explores the imageries of political mythologies and their usage.

"Super Superior Civilizations" poses a critical view of the visual language presented in national political myths, and explores their cultural charge, their hierarchization, and their use. In his compelling approach, Guerreiro do Divino Amor ties together different narratives with virtuosity, irony, and humor. Through these layers of connectivity, he effectively carves out the diverse entanglements of our globalized existence that have been impacted by aspects such as postcolonial distortion.

With his work at the Swiss Pavilion, Guerreiro do Divino Amor writes another chapter in his monumental saga «Superfictional World Atlas», which he has been working on since 2005. He chose Andrea Bellini, who currently oversees the Centre d'Art Contemporain and the Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement in Geneva, to curate the project’s gestation. In the summer of 2022, Andrea Bellini curated Guerreiro do Divino Amor’s exhibition «Superfictional Sanctuaries» at the Centre d'Art Contemporain.

CS

We have commissioned artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah RA to represent Great Britain at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in 2024. John Akomfrah’s British Council Commission for the British Pavilion will run from 20 April – 24 November 2024.

Meet John Akomfrah

Akomfrah, who was recently honoured with a knighthood in the 2023 UK Honours list, is known for his art films and multi-screen video installations, which explore major issues including racial injustice, colonial legacies, diasporic identities, migration and climate change.
The London-based artist initially came to prominence in the early 1980s as part of the Black Audio Film Collective (BAFC), a group of seven artists founded in 1982. The BAFC's first film was Handsworth Songs (1986) which explored the events around the 1985 riots in Birmingham and London. In recent years, his multichannel video works have evolved into ambitious, multi-screen installations shown in galleries and museums worldwide. In 2017, he won the Artes Mundi prize, the UK’s biggest award for international art. He has previously participated in La Biennale di Venezia with his piece Four Nocturnes, commissioned for the inaugural Ghana Pavilion in 2019.

On accepting the British Council commission, John Akomfrah said:
'It is a huge privilege and an honour to be asked to represent the UK at the 60th Venice Biennale – it is without a doubt one of the most exciting opportunities that an artist can be presented with. I see this invitation as recognition of, and a platform for all those I have collaborated with over the decades, and who continue to make my work possible. I’m grateful to be given a moment to explore the complex history and significance of this institution and the nation it represents, as well as its architectural home in Venice – with all the stories it has told and will continue to.'

Later this year, here at the British Council, we will appoint an Associate Curator to work alongside John Akomfrah and our team to develop the exhibition. This post will be generously supported by Shane Akeroyd and offers mid-career curators a unique professional opportunity to work with a leading British artist on a global platform.

The selection committee unanimously chose Julien Creuzet: "for his work, where poetry infuses a multiplicity of practices with strength and generosity: sculpture, text, video, music, performance, even new technologies. These different elements are used to construct immersive and multisensory worlds animated by whispering memories. His singular work and his gift for oral literature are informed by creolisation, bringing together a diversity of materials, stories, forms and gestures. The questions raised by his works will have particularly significant resonances with the issues of our time at the French Pavilion in Venice. Julien Creuzet has also been chosen for the horizons he draws, venturing beyond the opposition between identity and universality, demonstrating that, in the midst of his art, poetic and artistic resonances trace answers that are as beautiful, joyful and restorative as they are unexpected. "

Julien Creuzet is a visual artist, video maker, performer and poet, born in 1986 in Le Blanc Mesnil. He lives and works in Montreuil. He spent most of his childhood in Martinique. His early years in the Caribbean, at the crossroads of African, Indian and European cultures, have left their mark on a body of work where the fusion of imaginary worlds plays a central role. He studied at the École Supérieure d'Arts & Médias de Caen/Cherbourg and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, and graduated from Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains in 2013. He teaches at the Beaux-Arts de Paris.

Julien Creuzet has presented his work in numerous solo exhibitions, including recently at LUMA Arles (2022); Camden Arts Center, London (2020); CAN Centre d'Art Neuchâtel, Switzerland (2019); VR Arles Festival as part of the extramural exhibition of the Palais de Tokyo at the Rencontres d'Arles (2018); Fondation d'Entreprise Ricard and Bétonsalon - Centre d'Art et de Recherche, Paris; NaMiMa gallery of the École Nationale Supérieure d'Art et de Design de Nancy (2016) and Frac Basse-Normandie, Caen (2015). His work has also been presented in numerous group exhibitions: "Aujourd'hui aura lieu", extramural exhibition of the Palais de Tokyo as part of the 12th Gwangju Biennale (2018); "Le centre ne peut tenir", Lafayette Anticipations, Paris, 2018; "A Cris Ouverts" 6th edition of the Ateliers de Rennes, Biennale d'Art Contemporain (2018); at the Rencontres de Bamako, 11th African Photography Biennale (2017); at the 14th Lyon Biennale (2017); at the Frac Pays de la Loire (Carquefou, 2016) and at La Galerie, Centre d'Art Contemporain (Noisy-le-Sec, 2015).

He is the winner of the Étant Donnés 2022 prize organised by the Villa Albertine and the Comité Professionnel des Galeries d'Art, the BMW Art Journey 2021 Prize and was nominated for the 2021 Marcel Duchamp Prize. He is represented by High Art (Paris), Andrew Kreps Gallery (New York), Document (Chicago).

The French Pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia - International Art Exhibition is operated by the French Institute on behalf of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture.
