Berlinde De Bruyckere a Venezia

Net Making, a group exhibition curated by Viktoria Bavykina and Max Gorbatskyi which draws from the practice of weaving of camouflage nets collectively as a metaphor for joint horizontal actions, will present Ukraine at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. The exhibition will feature works by Katya Buchatska (in collaboration with 15 neurodivergent artists)Andrii Dostliev and Lia DostlievaDaniil Revkovskyi and Andrii Rachynskyi, and Oleksandr Burlaka.

"Weaving nets is a key metaphor reflecting today's Ukraine. Amid the Russian invasion, Ukrainians are uniting: volunteer to fight, rebuild destroyed houses of their neighbors, fundraise, and gather to weave camouflage nets. It is a recognition of a bottom-up joint action that benefits each other and the country," the curators comment.

The theme of the Biennale Arte 2024, Stranieri Ovunque — Foreigners Everywhere, touches upon the universal issues of otherness and the coexistence of diversity. In line with the Biennale's theme, the Ukrainian Pavilion project will address the topic of otherness through personal experiences of war, emigration, assimilation in new societies, and the transformation of language under the pressure of violence.

IN THE PAVILION

The Ukrainian pavilion is framed by Oleksandr Burlaka's architectural installation work, composed of woven linen fabrics from the 1950s which were found at Ukrainian flea markets and online marketplaces. The installation creates a circular space for three other art projects: the film CiviliansInvasion by Daniil Revkovskyi and Andrii Rachynskyi, the installation Best Wishes by Katya Buchatska, and the video Comfort Work by Andrii Dostliev and Lia Dostlieva.

Daniil Revkovskyi  and Andrii Rachynskyi will present the film Civilians. Invasion, which tells the story of the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine through the eyes of survivors. The artists assembled the film from the videos they found using open sources and private YouTube channels. “This film is a horror encyclopedia, capturing the harrowing experiences people endure during a full-scale invasion,” the artists note. Precarious and authentic footage made by witnesses risks being lost in the flux of video content, but collected together, these films attempt to both communicate people's experiences while serving as preserved evidence of crime.

Katya Buchatska will present Best Wishes, a work she created in collaboration with neurodivergent artists. During the first week of the full-scale invasion, Buchatska resumed online classes at an inclusive art workshop in Kyiv, where artists met daily to paint and talk. “Life went on, days passed, birthdays came. We wished each other happy birthday on every occasion, and gradually, the language clichés became increasingly obtrusive and incongruous, alienated from us,” says the artist. Best Wishes is an attempt to rethink the conventions of greetings and wishes — clichés that often operate under rules of language rather than the actual needs of human communication. In her work, Buchatska explores language transformations amid life-threatening conditions, emphasising the imperative to resist violence.

Continuing the theme of clichés and otherness, Comfort Work by Andrii Dostliev and Lia Dostlieva ironically investigates the stereotypes and expectations laid upon refugees in Europe, playfully creating a safe space for Ukrainians with the experience of displacement to reclaim their agency and throw those stereotypes back in the faces of those who created them. The project involves Ukrainian communities across Europe who shaped the stereotypical representations of themselves with the help of local professional actors.

ABOUT THE CURATORS

Viktoria Bavykina and Max Gorbatskyi have been working together since 2019. In 2022, they founded Ukrainian.Photographies, a platform that collects visual and textual research on Ukrainian photography. In 2023, they curated the HOME programme at Open Eye Gallery, and culture institutions across Liverpool City Region as part of the EuroFestival, a parallel programme of Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool, UK. They were co-curators of several exhibitions dedicated to the Ukrainian Photographic Alternative, an informal group that united over 100 photographers from all over Ukraine.

The Net Making project is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Institute, Goethe-Institut, British Council, The University of Liverpool, PEN America’s Artists at Risk Connection (ARC), Grynyov Art Collection, Open Eye Gallery, Documenting Ukraine, Institute for Human Sciences, European Union under the House of Europe programme, Galeria Labirynt, LAW NET, Scott&Co, and atelienormalno.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) approves temporary loan request by artist collective CATPC

Historic step forwards for artist collective Cercle d'Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (CATPC) and Lusanga (DRC), as Virginia Museum of Fine Arts confirms the loan of the sculpture ‘Balot’, a carved wood ancestral power-figure made in 1931. CATPC requested the temporary loan of Balot in anticipation of the exhibition in the 2024 Dutch National participation at the International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia in collaboration with Dutch artist Renzo Martens and curator Hicham Khalidi. The sculpture is expected to be on display in Lusanga to the public from April 20 to November 24, 2024, parallel to the Biennale di Venezia.

The sculpture has been part of the VMFA collection since 2015. The statue was created after the Pende Revolt of 1931 by a Kwilu Pende artist and was initially intended as a power object to harness Belgian Colonial Officer Maximilian Balot’s angry spirit. It was used as a force for protection against the plantation regime. For CATPC, given the current conditions on the former Unilever plantations and the strategies of resistance of the communities today, the return of this sculpture, even on a temporary basis, is of great significance.

It has long been CATPC’s wish and that of their community that the ancestral sculpture will travel back to Lusanga to be ritually reunited with the region’s notables, traditional chiefs, current and former plantation workers, children, women, men and other Earth-beings. CATPC believes in restoring balance and correcting past injustices once the sculpture held sacred to their community is displayed at the White Cube museum in Lusanga. It will allow their community to physically and historically reconnect with their history and their resistance, to recover the sculpture’s meaning and purpose and to express “a shared heritage for all humanity that traverses the world” (Ced’art Tamasala, CATPC).

Ced’art Tamasala on behalf of CATPC: “We at CATPC are part of a new generation of plantation workers that is seeking, proposing and trying to find sustainable answers to the long-standing questions that are the key to the liberation of plantations. The return of Balot focusses our energy and strengthens our cause. Ultimately, by restoring the balance and correcting past injustices, the return of Balot will allow us to continue to buy back the land that was taken from us by colonial forces, it will enable us to abolish forced and destructive monoculture and to plant, regenerate and nourish back into existence our sacred forests.”

“The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is delighted to partner with CATPC for this important exhibition,” says VMFA’s Director and CEO Alex Nyerges. “The sculpture’s appearance in Lusanga will be profoundly meaningful to the people in that region. The loan of a wooden sculpture from an American museum’s collection to a museum in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is also of historic significance, and we hope it will inspire a new era of collaboration and partnerships between museums on both continents.”

Eelco van der Lingen, director of the Mondriaan Fund and commissioner: "It’s great that the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is committed to really engage with the meaning of the sculpture and with the value it represents for the people from where it originates. I am delighted the loan is agreed on for CATPC and I trust that this narrative will be given a proper podium at La Biennale di Venezia in the presentation by CATPC, Renzo Martens and Hicham Khalidi.”

Hicham Khalidi, curator: “This is truly a historic moment. One that culminates with the showing of the other sculptures at the Rietveld Pavilion in Venice in an attempt to mend back into a whole the fragmented collective’s history.”

Renzo Martens, Dutch artist: “I am so glad that we have been able to create, even if on a small, and still symbolic scale, a level playing field, between the museums and communities on the plantations that have financed the construction of museums. Now that VMFA has decided to enter in a constructive dialogue with CATPC, this sculpture, and art in general, can fulfill its full role in life. I could not be more pleased."

La Biennale di Venezia

For the 60th edition of the International Art Exhibitions of La Biennale di Venezia CATPC will present new works in the Dutch National participation in collaboration with artist Renzo Martens and curator Hicham Khalidi. The forthcoming exhibition is but one component of their ongoing commitment for the plantation of Lusanga to be freed, regenerated and transformed back into sacred forests, as well as their commitment to a greater project of spiritual, ethical and economic reckoning. The exhibition will be on display from 20 April 2024 until 24 November 2024 at the Rietveld Pavilion in Venice and simultaneously in the White Cube in Lusanga (DRC).

The National Pavilion UAE Announces 2024 Exhibition Abdullah Al Saadi: Sites of Memory, Sites of Amnesia Curated by Tarek Abou El Fetouh

Wanderer and chronicler, Abdullah Al Saadi is considered a key figure of the founding contemporary art scene in the UAE. His solo exhibition for the National Pavilion UAE features eight artworks inspired by his journeys into the wilderness and proposes to look at his creative process in relation to the practices of Arab poets centuries ago. During his journeys, Al Saadi starts to draw, paint, or write once he feels immersed in nature. Similarly, classical Arab poets described this immersion as the process leading up to the composition of their poems.

He travels alone, accompanied only by a specific book, music, animal friend, or means of transportation, which significantly impacts his artworks as they keep him company while exploring the land and humankind’s place in it. The exhibition is an invitation to enter Abdullah Al Saadi’s singular world and to wander among its unique and rich features.

For more information about the National Pavilion UAE’s eighth participation at the Biennale Arte please visit here. The National Pavilion UAE will be inaugurated on 17 April 2024 at 11 a.m. during the Preview Days 17-19 April 2024.  The 60th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia will open to the public in Venice, Italy between 20 April - 24 November 2024.

Image: “Roma Talismano” still image, photo by Guerreiro do Divino Amor & Diego Paulino, with performers Ventura Profana, Adriana Carvalho and Amanda Seraphico, 2023

The Swiss Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, commissioned by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, presents the exhibition “Super Superior Civilizations” by Swiss-Brazilian artist Guerreiro do Divino Amor, curated by Andrea Bellini.

The Swiss Pavilion exhibition presents the sixth and seventh chapters of Guerreiro do Divino Amor's monumental "Superfictional World Atlas" saga: The Miracle of Helvetia and Roma Talismano. The "Superfictional World Atlas" is a worldwide cartographic project, allegorical in nature and potentially infinite in scope, which the artist has been dedicated to for nearly two decades. Through his studies and research in experimental architecture, Guerreiro do Divino Amor's artistic practice questions the relationship between urban space and collective imagination, between architecture and ideology, and between political propaganda and national identity.

In the Swiss Pavilion, Guerreiro aims at creating the most complex and ambitious installation of his career so far: a total, immersive work of art, littered with classical architectural elements — artificial symbols of an assumed Western racial superiority. Columns, fountains, and capitals, along with large surfaces of fake marble textures, suggest an imagery of power and supremacy and serve as the backdrop for the Pavilion's two main installations.

The Miracle of Helvetia, a video that stages a grand allegory of Switzerland, represented as a miraculous and "super-fictional" paradise on earth, in which nature and technology, capitalism and democracy, rusticity and sophistication are in perfect and surreal balance. A long corridor connects The Miracle of Helvetia with the installation Roma Talismano, an allegorical entity and phantasmagorical twin of Roman civilization, as well as a symbol — through the centuries — of a supposed moral, political and cultural superiority. Brazilian artist and singer Ventura Profana embodies the Capitoline wolf, a symbolic and phantasmagorical animal, that sings a song narrating the exploits of three allegorical animals: the she-wolf, the ewe lamb and the eagle. By being mythical figures in the constitution of white identity and its imagined superiority, the wolf is the universal mother from whom the superior people descend; the eagle is the symbol of Roman war supremacy; and the lamb embodies, in Christian Rome, the very idea of purity and innocence.

"The Swiss Pavilion, as envisioned by the artist, plays with the national logic of celebratory self-representation through culture, which is at the very origin of the National Pavilions at the Giardini over a century ago," says Andrea Bellini. “A curious documentarist with a baroque imagination and an extraordinary worlds builder, Guerreiro do Divino Amor invites us to laugh in a benevolent spirit at our chauvinism and at those clichés with which we represent the world and ourselves. The latter attitude seems to us of fundamental importance in a period of increasing polarisation of politics and radical oppositions such as the one we are currently experiencing."

Project team

For the Swiss Pavilion project, “Super Superior Civilizations”, artist Guerreiro do Divino Amor and curator Andrea Bellini worked together with executive producer Larisa Oancea, director assistant Diego Paulino, musical director Beà Ayoolà, scenography producer Giovanna Bellini, technical director Pedro Zaz, sculptress Lyz Parayzo and costume designer Andy Roba, among many others. The cast includes Ventura Profana (the she-wolf), Adriana Carvalho (the eagle) and Amanda Seraphico (the ewe lamb).

The exhibition “Super Superior Civilizations” will be accompanied by a newspaper-format publication including a conversation between Guerreiro do Divino Amor and Andrea Bellini.
