The Danish Pavilion At the 58th International Art Exhibition will Present Heirloom by Larissa Sansour

1
At the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, the Danish-Palestinian artist Larissa Sansour will present Heirloom, an otherworldly rumination on memory, history and identity.  Curated by Nat Muller, the exhibition will comprise of a two-channel science-fiction film, a sculptural installation and an architectural intervention, inviting the viewer into a dark universe.

“The film, entitled ‘In Vitro’, is staged in the town of Bethlehem decades after an eco-disaster.  The dying founder of a subterranean orchard is engaged in a dialogue with her young successor, who is born underground and has never seen the town she’s destined to replant and repopulate. Inherited trauma, exile and collective memory are central themes.

The younger woman struggles with her memories of the past, dismissing them as nothing but reductive patterns, tropes and iconography.  This is a topic of great interest to me. In my recent work, the negotiation of identity markers and signifiers is a key focus.  While these aim to erect the pillars of a shared understanding, they also tend to rid the notions they emphasise of any significance, eventually rendering them meaningless.

“The sculptural installation takes a psychological object from the film and recreates it as a large-scale monument.  It further explores the protagonist’s trauma and converts it to a physically imposing fact.”

The interplay between fiction and reality, the ever-evolving merger of myth and history, is a recurring theme in Sansour’s art.  As curator Nat Muller explains: “Science fiction becomes a vehicle in which imaginaries and future scenarios can be challenged and tested, and in which individual narratives and personal experiences intertwine with collective ones; it becomes a place and time in which remembrance and forgetfulness compete, and where the past, the present, and even the future, might be dispossessed. Nevertheless it is also is a realm of possibility, of alternative world-making, if not radical alterity.”

The film ‘In Vitro’ is directed with Søren Lind and features the internationally-renowned Palestinian actors Hiam Abbass and Maisa Abd Elhadi.  It was filmed in Bethlehem, London and Oxfordshire.

International Art Exhibition — La Biennale di Venezia May 13 – November 16, 2017
Kirstine Roepstorff Influenza: theatre of glowing darkness.

Developed by visual artist Kirstine Roepstorff, the exhibition project influenza challenges us to embrace darkness as a positive force of healing, transformation, and empowerment. To give birth to our future.

If the entirety of necessary information pre-exists within all forms, the only action that’s required to effect change is to dissolve prevailing beliefs – to enter the rumbling, alive unknown. One must be willing to completely abolish old systems to advance towards new ways of thinking, understanding and being.

Darkness dissolves form and can be seen as the pregnant void out of which all things arise. The exhibition will explore the metamorphosis that occurs between the destruction of the known and the embrace of the new. Darkness. At the beginning of all creation. When everything was just floating energy in complete darkness…

Maybe you remember, which choices you made here? And what you chose to rehearse and to learn in this life? How much did you dare to risk in order to grow?

How much darkness did you absorb? Do you remember? influenza consists of an immersive theatre and a structural intervention in the pavilion and surrounding gardens. “theatre of glowing darkness” is a dynamic large-scale installation that uses darkness, light projections, glass and a dialogue between three protagonists. Using the pavilion itself as a sculptural form, the artist has created an architectural re-structuring project altering preestablished borders to mediate with her surrounding landscape intervention.

The exhibition is accompanied by a booklet with contributions by Angela Rosenberg, Sepake Angiama, Solvej Helweg Ovesen and Ute Meta Bauer. The four contributors form the Consortium for the exhibition project, and have acted as a ‘sounding board’ for the artist through every stage of the project’s development.

Biography and selected exhibitions Born in 1972, Kirstine Roepstorff lives and works in Fredericia, Denmark. She graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Roepstorff’s artistic practice consists primarily of mixed media collages pointing out existing power relations, and critically investigating the history and failures of political ideas. By editing and decomposing original materials, her work generates new contexts that open up spaces for negotiation and new narratives.

Roepstorff’s practice is situated in those “in-between” spaces of negotiation.

Selected exhibitions: Andersen’s Contemporary, Copenhagen, DK (2016); Den Frie, Copenhagen, DK (2015); Kunstverein Göttingen, DE (2014); Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Kunstmuseum Basel, CH (2010); The National Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Oslo, NO (2010).

In recent years, Kirstine Roepstorff has created several large-scale public art projects, including "The Gong" for Dokk1 in Aarhus, DK (2015) and "Klangfrø" for the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics at the University of Copenhagen, DK (2014).

Her work is included in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; The Saatchi Gallery, London, UK; National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo, NO; National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen, DK among others.

The Danish Arts Foundation and La Biennale di Venezia The Danish Arts Foundation Committee for Visual Arts Project Funding is the Commissioner of the Danish pavilion and has appointed the artist Kirstine Roepstorff to represent Denmark at the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

The Committee consists of Gitte Ørskou (chair), Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, Bodil Nielsen and Jacob Tækker. With the generous additional support of: New Carlsberg Foundation for the “theatre of glowing darkness”. Kvadrat collaborated on the tapestry and supported the textiles.

Danh Vo a Venezia per il Padiglione Danese

Dal sito www.kunstkritikk.se è stata data notizia che l'artista Danh Vo sarà al Padiglione Danese.  L'artista è noto per il suo lavoro sulla Statua della Libertà.

Danh Vo, We The People (Detail), 2010-2013. Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen 2012.

English
A press release issued by the Danish Arts Foundation today states that the Committee for Visual Arts Project Funding has selected Danh Vo as the artist to be featured in the Danish Pavilion in the 2015 Venice Biennial.

Appointing Danh Vo to represent Denmark at the 56th Venice Biennial is not just an obvious choice in view of the committee’s ambition to “show pre-eminent examples of Danish contemporary art in an international context”. Out of all currently active artists with close ties to Denmark, Vo has had one of the most prominent careers on the international art scene in the last decade. He exhibits his work at many of the most important institutions in the world and collaborates with some of the most cutting-edge artists, curators, and galleries around today. But Vo is also an interesting choice for a national pavilion because he often addresses, with his distinctive neo-conceptual approach, issues of nationality and migrant culture in a highly personal manner, always characterised by his unusually well-honed sense for reading rooms and contexts – both physical and cultural. His large-scale work We the People (Detail), 2010-2013, which has been exhibited at e.g. Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, is a good example of this.

Danh Vo

Danh Vo (b. 1975) is a graduate from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen and the Städelschule in Frankfurt. Born in Vietnam, Vo grew up in Denmark, arriving here at the age of four with his family.

With their choice of Vo the Danish Arts Foundation continues the selection policy evident from the previous Venice Biennial, where Denmark was represented by another young Danish artist with an international career, Jesper Just (who belongs to the same generation of artists as Vo).

Back then the International Committee for Visual Arts wanted the pavilion to house a project that integrated and merged art, architecture, and communication, even going so far as to dictate that “such ‘experimental co-operation’ will form the fundamental premise of the Danish contribution to the Biennial”, which specifically meant that Just would “work closely with an architect and a communicator/educator of his choice”, as the press release issued back then said. The very brief press release provided by the Danish Arts Foundation today stipulates no particular preconditions or expectations regarding Danh Vo’s upcoming contribution to the Danish Pavilion.

The Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Visual Arts Project Funding is responsible for and funds Denmark’s participation in the Venice Biennial. The current Committee comprises the following members: Gitte Ørskou (chair), Bodil Nielsen, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, Jacob Tækker, and Claus Andersen.

The Danish Arts Council presents Jesper Just’s multi-channel filmic odyssey and architectural intervention for the Danish Pavilion at the 55th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia, June  1–November 24, 2013. Collaborating with Project Projects (New York), a graphic design studio, the project will integrate film, digital communications, and the Danish Pavilion’s physical space.
Renowned Danish artist Jesper Just will present a film project that will examine themes of architectural pastiche and cultural dislocation for the Danish Pavilion. Commissioned by the Danish Arts Council, Just’s contribution will consist of five films played simultaneously in a looped format as part of one singular, cyclical narrative. The films weave together a depiction of what appears to be Paris due to certain architectural signifiers, but then assumptions are challenged as the landscape becomes uncanny.
Key to all of Jesper Just’s films is the question of representation. How do we create images? And how do these images, in turn, conjure ideas, expectations, and conventions?
In addition to the films, Just will create an architectural intervention on the Pavilion, integrated with the film installation, based on the paradoxical mismatch of the Danish Pavilion’s 1930s neoclassical architecture and its 1960s modernist addition.
An accompanying communications system developed by design studio Project Projects will allow people to experience the pavilion outside of Venice and create a mirrored experience in parallel with Just’s project.
The project is funded by the Danish Arts Council. The project has received additional support from Nørgaard på Strøget, Copenhagen. Jesper Just’s film project is co-produced by Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen.
