“From the slit of this narrow door”
With Annalisa Sacchi e Ilenia Caleo.
An affective polyphony of the submerged [to Patrizia Vicinelli].
Saturday 13, at 5.30 pm

in the context of Dark Matter Games

What comes to be established in the art market is only a part of the visible. What if we look at the dark matter from a sexual and feminist perspective? Let's start with a gesture: let’s bring back to the surface a submerged (yet bright) matter. This is the work by Patrizia Vicinelli, loud poetess, actress, performer,
junkie, and generative intersection of multiple relationships. A singularity, which however grows into a trace, a symptomatic manifestation. Why does the work of numerous artists disappear, becoming obscure matter? Firstly because of gender inequality, that draws distinct geographies of exploitation. But also because those who work on the margins often overrun the genres - of sex and language - agitate the canon, turn physicality into writing. So that every biography becomes an anomaly that cannot be placed.
The point is not to make a list of the excluded. When looking at contemporary processes of production according to a sex driven approach, a connection emerges between production and reproduction, between bio-economies and the government of bodies, which radically redefines the borders of life and work. In the
art sphere, the work of female artists has, from time to time, challenged the canons and invented new postures. Here - in this crack - radical epistemologies settle and new paradigms to understand the forms of production are possible.

Et in terra

Padiglione Russo

Theatrum Orbis, a new exhibition conceived and created for the Russian Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale, features artists Grisha Bruskin, Recycle Group and Sasha Pirogova alongside contemporary Russian composers.

The exhibition title – translated as ‘Theatre of the World’ - takes its name from Abraham Ortelius’ atlas published in Antwerp in 1570. Marking an epoch in the history of cartography, it was the first modern atlas to unite knowledge and experience across science and culture accumulated during the Age of Discovery.

Theatrical in its concept and form, the exhibition includes sculpture, installation, video and sound across three emotively connected parts. Visitors follow a narrative throughout the pavilion, first encountering Bruskin’s installation of figurative white sculptures; then, on descending the stairs and passing through a labyrinth, further rooms contain works by Recycle Group and Pirogova. While Bruskin represents a long-established generation of Russian artists, Recycle Group and Pirogova come from a new post-digital era engaged with technology.

Music and sound plays a very important role in the exhibition, with specially written scores by Dimitri Kourdlianski, Peter Aidu and Konstantin Dudakov-Kashuro. For the first time sound is not constrained by the walls of the pavilion, but is taken out into the Giardini, establishing a dialogue with the viewer through Dmitri Kourliandski’s sound performance “Commedia delle arti”.

Spazio anche più che tempo

CS

Turin, Italy... Beginning May 8, 2017, the Archivio Carol Rama is proud to present the first Venice exhibition in a decade to celebrate the late artist Carol Rama (b. 1918, Turin, Italy–d. 2015, Turin, Italy). Carol Rama. Spazio anche più che tempo will feature a group of exceptional works representing the broad range of materials and styles that comprise her iconoclastic oeuvre, and highlighting her skillful approach to organizing the space of the picture plane.

Rather than a survey, Carol Rama. Spazio anche più che tempo explores the many stages of Rama’s artistic development through a group of thirty works that introduce viewers to the richness of her formal styles and her bold iconography. As a self-taught artist who confidently paved her own path, Rama is celebrated as a fearless and transgressive figure. Continually engaged in an inventive approach to structure and composition, she seasoned her art with unconventional media, industrial material, provocative imagery, and psychologically-charged legends.

Carol Rama. Spazio anche più che tempo opens in conjunction with the 57th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, and will take place at the historic Ca' nova on the Grand Canal. Venice has special significance within the story of Rama’s career: In 2003, she received the Biennale’s coveted Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, and in 1993 the Biennale included an exhibition devoted to her work. In a much earlier phase of her career, she participated in the Venice Biennales of 1948, 1950, 1952, and 1956.

On view through June 28, 2017, the exhibition also coincides with Carol Rama: Antibodies at the New Museum, New York, which marks the artist’s first New York City museum survey. Curated by the institution’s Artistic Director Masimilliano Gioni, Carol Rama: Antibodies opens to the public on May 3, 2017, and will be the largest presentation of her work in the United States to date.

About the Exhibition

Carol Rama. Spazio anche più che tempo is curated by Maria Cristina Mundici and Raffaella Roddolo, members of the Scientific Committee of the Archivio Carol Rama. Retracing the progression of Rama’s career, the stylistically diverse works on view are connected by a one shared characteristic: a wholly unique approach to composition. The exhibition at Palazzo Ca' nova celebrates what could be called Rama’s “absolute eye”. Rama took in stimuli from intellectuals and other artists, creating works that embody a very personal reaction to the various artistic contexts through which she moved. Rama’s oeuvre defies and transcends many plausible artistic lineages, which might include Felice Casorati, Picasso, Egon Schiele, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, the Movimento d'arte concreta (MAC), and the postwar French avant-garde. The works on view at Palazzo Ca' nova are markedly different from each other, but their forms, colors, and materials are consistently treated with precision and effortless grace. The autodidact’s eye was activated by a desire to go beyond the known and expected.  Rama’s art continues to inspire new generations of contemporary artists.

Takahiro Iwasaki was born in the Hiroshima Prefecture where he is also currently based. This solo exhibition presents a selection of three-dimensional works created using everyday familiar objects including towels, books, and plastic rubbish. Characteristic of Iwasaki’s works is his fine handiwork by which he transforms his materials, such as creating steel towers from the threads pulled out of towels and construction cranes from bookmark strings attached to books. His use of these everyday objects draw influence from the numerous artifacts housed in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, conveying the instant changes in the forms of daily necessities as a consequence of the atomic bomb. Furthermore, his use of “figurative representation” can not only be described as a traditionally “Japanese” technique, but is a conscious decision that is based on the significant turnabout in Hiroshima’s position before and after the war, from a military city into a city of peace. Iwasaki’s method of making small interventions to have a remarkable impact on a large scale is that which also relates to Hiroshima’s experience of the atomic bomb, and how the power of microscopic atoms had resulted in the annihilation of the city.

For his works Iwasaki has selected motifs of both old and new buildings in the coastal regions of Japan, including a traditional shrine built above the sea, chemical plants that stand along Hiroshima’s coast, as well as oilrigs. Reflection Model (Ship of Theseus) is a new work based on the motif of a shrine reflecting on the surface of water, however since the reflected image is conveyed without fluctuation, it appears as an unrealistic representation that captures a fleeting and stationary moment in time and space. The fact that the shrine is depicted in its broken state after the typhoon is a conscious decision on Iwasaki’s part, who focuses on how its structure is made to protect its important areas by enabling sections of it to be intentionally destroyed when inflicted with external force, thus eluding any substantial damage. This method of elusion by accepting the circumstances presented is one that can be said to illustrate the Japanese way of confronting nature.

From issues of nuclear energy and the development of resources, to chemical plants that despite supporting the high growth of the postwar economy had been a serious cause for pollution, Iwasaki’s works shed light on the various challenges and situations confronted by Japan’s rural regions, and through them present an image of Japan from a different and distinguished perspective. The exhibition’s title, “Turned Upside Down, It’s a Forest” is in reference to a text written by Venetian novelist Tiziano Scarpa, describing how the city of Venice is built on an infinite number of stakes driven into the lagoon. The exhibition communicates the importance of changing one’s perspective, and invites the viewers to embrace different ways of looking.

Beauty and the Beast

The contemporary art exhibition “Beauty and the Beast” will be shown in the context of the 2017 Venice Biennale at Palazzo Tiepolo Passi, a magnificent 16th century palace overlooking the Grand Canal, from May 13th to November 26th 2017.

Inspired by the famous fairy tale, the exhibition will present works by Judi Harvest and Quentin Garel in a narrative framework that speaks of the fate of mankind.

Beauty and the Beast aims to address a highly topical and very important subject: the relationship established by human beings with the rest of nature.

The powerful works of Quentin Garel (drawings and wooden or bronze sculptures of wild animals and fossil skeletons of prehistoric creatures) embody man in the form of the Beast, which simultaneously alludes to two aspects: on one hand the inseparable and ancestral kinship which connects us to other species, and on the other the loss of the “humanity” of our race. Mankind, essentially comprising generous beings who want to be loved by other living creatures, is caught in an evil spell, the desire of power, and whose aim is to confront nature to its goals, opening up the road to its destruction, which turns out to be self-destruction.

The extraordinary works created by Judi Harvest represent the kingdom of bees, and embody the Beauty of nature as a cooperative and balanced relationship, but at the same time fragile and wonderful. Bees are nature's messengers, the environment's antennas. The life of bees and our own depend on their incredible work, which determines the existence and proliferation of a huge number of plants. A large part of our day-to-day survival is linked to pollination by bees: our food, about one bite in every three of the food we eat, or our clothes, such as in the case of cotton for textiles.

The “Beauty and the Beast” exhibition explores the themes of love and redemption, presenting the encounter between Man/Beast and Bees/the Beauty of Nature. The harmonious and positive example of bees could break the spell that human beings are under, but will the message only be strong enough once the danger of extinction is irreversible, getting through only at the point of their sacrifice? Will it be an irreversible catastrophe for the human race too?

The exhibition route will be set out in a Y-shape. In the first room on the main floor of Palazzo Tiepolo Passi, visitors will come face to face with Quentin Garel's large sculptures, representing the Beast, which all human beings can identify with to some extent.

Moving to the second room, which represents the intersection of the Y, the visitors will assist to the meeting between Garel's ape sculpture (gorilla with its deeply human eyes, beyond any "beastliness") and a work of Harvest, inspired by bees and their hives. An exchange of looks in the Venice sunlight filtering through the windows overlooking the Grand Canal.

The two next rooms, one on the left and one on the right, represent the different outcomes of the dialogue between man and nature. By going left, visitors can enjoy the positive development of the relationship. A world of potential harmony and extraordinary beauty embodied by the works of Harvest, including a special installation with hundreds of different seeds made from Murano glass using three different production techniques. To the right, visitors can instead witness the continuation of the evil spell, which will lead to an uncontrolled manipulation of nature by man (Garel's two-headed calf). Harvest's honey jars will be displayed in a setting reminiscent of the enchanted forest found in many fairy tales, with branches almost enveloping the artworks like grabbing hands. But the vases will stand as symbolic time capsules, free to carry beauty and hope into the future.

By adopting a narrative paradigm, the "Beauty and the Beast" exhibition is intended first of all to be understandable and enjoyable for an audience of any age, including children. Through multiple levels of interpretation, the exhibition transcends art itself and aims to offer a conceptual, artistic and visual experience of an important topic for the future of the human race.

Fondation Valmont - Patron for Art and Beauty - is the fourth pillar of the Valmont Group dedicated to contemporary art. Fondation Valmont aims to raise awareness and interest for artistic creation, to extend the experience of art and beauty to a large audience and to support emerging artists. For this purpose, Fondation Valmont organizes and supports every year several exhibitions in places of major cultural interest such as Venice, the island of Hydra in Greece, Hong Kong, New York, Tokyo, Berlin and Barcelona. Didier Guillon, President and Artistic Director of the Valmont Group, invites the artists to develop their works in connection with a specific topic and to find new ways to open contemporary art to a wide public of any ages. The Dialogue of Fire. Ceramic and glass masters from Barcelona to Venice, Collateral Evento Collaterale of the 56° Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte – La Biennale di Venezia (2015), and El Cuor No Se Vende, at the Museum of the Historical Archive in Hydra (2016) are the main initiatives the Foundation has supported so far.

JTI + Biennale

Geta Brătescu – Apparitions will represent Romania at the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. The exhibition will take place both in the Romanian Pavilion in Giardini della Biennale and the New Gallery of the Romanian Institute for Culture and Humanistic Research in Venice and will be open to the public from May 13th to November 26th, 2017.
Geta Brătescu’s participation in Biennale Arte 2017 brings together works representative of all the stages of her artistic trajectory – many of them shown for the first time –, demonstrating the ease with which she employs a multitude of artistic media. The exhibition Apparitions is conceived through the lens of thematic clusters, including the most recent phase in her artistic practice, in an attempt to provide a mirror of her studio space, understood both as a physical space and a meta-artistic entity. The physical and mental spaces of the studio blend together in a complex assemblage, and so do the literary texts with their visual conceptualisations, the feminine mythologies with the process of self-investigation, personal memory with cultural memory and imagination. “Memory is apparition; an epiphany, like art”, states the artist.
In the current context, Geta Brătescu’s presence at Biennale Arte 2017 is aimed at communicating art’s capacity to invent narratives that transcend the gloomy climate of the contemporary world, by means of an artistic reflection that highlights the transformative strength of femininity as the consummate embodiment of a “nomadic subject”. Geta Brătescu’s art finds itself in full consonance with the return to materiality, to the power of the artistic imagination, to art’s power to give shape. Her artistic practice resonates with the current debates about the role of art as a space that points to reality’s sore spots, but also as a means of instituting a specific language capable of generating new forms of subjectivity. [see full curatorial text]

Belgian pavilion with Dirk Braeckman

Flemish Minister Sven Gatz has commissioned Dirk Braeckman to represent Belgium at the 57th international art exhibition La Biennale di Venezia. For his solo exhibition in the Belgian pavilion, Dirk Braeckman will present exclusively new works. The exhibition will be curated by Eva Wittocx, and it will be organized by M - Museum Leuven. The 57th Venice Biennale runs from 13 May until 26 November 2017.
In his enigmatic photographs, Dirk Braeckman (1958) creates a closed, isolated world in which combines tactility and texture, distance and intimacy. His monumental works tell us nothing; yet they suggest entire stories. Braeckman reflects on the photographic image and challenges the illusions of the medium. In his creative process, the artist experiments with textures and materials. He examines effects such as over- and under-exposure through a variety of printing techniques. His images exceed the moment of capturing and reach beyond their frame. Braeckman finds the subjects for his photographic work in his immediate environment. They are often undefined places or spaces, preferably interior views. For the Biennale, Dirk Braeckman will create a new set of monumental photos and present them tailored to the architecture of the pavilion.
Dirk Braeckman is one of the most prominent Belgian artists of the moment. He has presented his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions both at nationally and internationally.

German pavilion

Anne Imhof will be the German pavilion’s artist at the 57th International Art Exhibition—
La Biennale di Venezia in 2017. Since May 2016, Imhof has worked on a spatially as well
as temporally expansive work conceived especially for the pavilion. Her oeuvre bridges the
divides between painting, sculpture, and installation as well as performance.

Gazes cross, but no communication ensues. They perceive others, but there is no recognition, no acknowledgment. Post-gender, individualized, peculiar and yet

stereotypical: such are the human figures in Anne Imhof’s paintings and scenarios. Noises, sounds, and compositions lend a rhythm to the spaces and bodies, synchronizing them in a dilated time loosely structured by narratives. The action is contingent; everything might be different at any moment. The movements fluctuate between the viscous mundanity of everyday life and mysterious rituals, between schematic, remote-controlled procedures and individual malfunctions, between uniformity and punk. Aligned with the group, an aimless individuality persists. They may sing together, but their song is of the I.

On mats and sleeping bags, amid punching bags, baseball bats, and razors, the performers
populate the training camp of capitalized bodies and optimized life. Strained to the point of bursting or gone limp, their regimented and fragile bodies appear as a material molded by pervasive yet invisible structures of power. Media representation is innate to these biotechno bodies: they seem forever on the verge of transformation into pictures ready for consumption; they aspire to become images, digital commodities.

Anne Imhof confronts the brutality of our time with a hard realism. Her scenarios visualize
the constitution of the body in the demarcation of material and discursive, of technological,
socioeconomic, and pharmaceutical boundaries. Imhof thus reveals the space between body and reality, the space where our personality comes into being.
