Intitolata Poolside Magic, la mostra comprende una serie di opere a pastello, carboncino e acquarello su carta che saranno esposte insieme per la prima volta. Poolside Magic, in cui un uomo in frac serve una donna nuda al bordo di una piscina, ruota intorno ai temi della sensualità, della mutevolezza, della magia e dell’occulto ed è ispirata alla vivacità e all’erotismo del paesaggio e della cultura di Trinidad, dove l’artista vive e lavora. Il materiale preparatorio della serie include una fotografia dell’artista di Trinidad Boscoe Holder (1921 – 2007) al lavoro nel suo studio di Port of Spain. La mostra, che sarà inaugurata in concomitanza con il vernissage della 57ª Biennale di Venezia, segna il ritorno in città di Ofili. L’artista aveva rappresentato la Gran Bretagna alla 50ª biennale nel 2003 con l’esposizione Within Reach, mentre nel 2015 una selezione dei suoi dipinti erano stati inclusi nella All The World’s Futures, la 56ª Esibizione d’Arte Internazionale della Biennale curata da Okwui Enwezor. Un’altra mostra di Chris Ofili, Weaving Magic, sarà ospitata alla National Gallery di Londra dal 26 aprile al 28 agosto 2017.
La nuova galleria di Victoria Miro aprirà al pubblico il 10 maggio 2017 e sarà il quarto spazio espositivo della gallerista, che si aggiunge a quelli situati a Londra tra Mayfair e Wharf Road. La nuova galleria darà agli artisti la possibilità di esporre mostre e progetti speciali in uno spazio intimo nel cuore di Venezia, città tanto legata all’arte.
Il nuovo spazio si trova nell’ex Galleria Il Capricorno nel quartiere San Marco. Inaugurata per la prima volta nel 1971 dalla collezionista Bruna Aickelin, Il Capricorno è famosa per aver ospitato artisti chiave del XX secolo come Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Cy Twombly e Robert Rauschenberg e figure contemporanee di rilievo internazionale. Inoltre, ha attratto figure leggendarie come Peggy Guggenheim nella sua storica location sul canale. Victoria Miro è legata a Bruna Aickelin da una lunga amicizia e sin dagli anni ‘90 Il Capricorno ha ospitato mostre personali di artisti rappresentati da Victoria quali Hernan Bas, Verne Dawson, NS Harsha, Chantal Joffe, Wangechi Mutu e Grayson Perry. Situata in un edificio del XVII secolo nel cuore di San Marco, la galleria si affaccia sulla strada e sul canale.
A proposito del nuovo spazio espositivo, Victoria Miro ha dichiarato: “Da un po’ di tempo discutevo con Bruno sul futuro della Galleria Il Capricorno, che negli ultimi cinquant’anni ha presentato il meglio dell’arte contemporanea. Abbiamo lavorato insieme per tanto tempo e ho sempre ammirato il suo approccio semplice e deciso che le ha permesso di esporre in questo piccolo gioiello nel cuore di Venezia. Le sono infinitamente grata per averci concesso questo ambiente meraviglioso e spero che altri nostri artisti abbiano presto la possibilità di esporre in questo spazio così affascinante”.
Bruna Aickelin ha commentato: “Peggy Guggenheim, Ileana Sonnabend, Paula Cooper, Barbara Gladstone, Lisa Spellman, Sadie Coles e Victoria Miro sono alcune delle prime collezioniste d’arte che ho avuto la grande fortuna di conoscere e con cui ho collaborato per diversi anni. Le nostre vite sono legate per sempre e sono onorata di cedere il testimone a Victoria”.
Chris Ofili
Chris Ofili è nato a Manchester, Inghilterra, nel 1968 ma vive e lavora a Trinidad. Le sue opere sono state presentate in tutto il mondo, con mostre personali al New Museum di New York (2014), all’Aspen Art Museum (2015); all’Arts Club di Chicago (2010), alla Tate Britain di Londra (nel 2010 e nel 2005), alla Kestnergesellschaft di Hannover (2006), allo Studio Museum di Harlem a New York (2005) e alla Serpentine Gallery di Londra (1998). Vincitore del Turner Prize nel 1998, nel 2003 ha rappresentato la Gran Bretagna alla 50ª Biennale di Venezia. Nel 2017 Ofili ha ricevuto il titolo onorario di Comandante dell’Ordine dell’Impero Britannico. La mostra di Chris Ofili Weaving Magic è in esposizione alla National Gallery di Londra dal 26 aprile al 28 agosto 2017.
Victoria Miro
Victoria Miro rappresenta 41 artisti e lasciti di artisti. La galleria possiede tre spazi espositivi tra Mayfair e Wharf Road, N1 per un totale di 1765 metri quadri ed è uno dei più grandi spazi commerciali di Londra. Victoria Miro ha aperto la sua prima galleria in Cork Street, a Mayfair, nel 1985. Nel 2000 si è trasferita in un’ex fabbrica di mobili con una superficie di 740 metri quadri completamente ristrutturata e situata tra Hoxton e Islington, nell’area nord-est di Londra. Nell’ottobre 2006 la galleria si è ampliata includendo un secondo spazio in un edificio adiacente situato in Wharf Road. Nell’ottobre 2013 Victoria Miro è tornata a Mayfair, dove ha inaugurato un terzo locale al piano terra di un importante complesso all’angolo tra St George e Maddox Street, proprio dietro Sotheby’s in Bond Street. Victoria Miro Venice è il quarto spazio espositivo permanente della gallerista. Nel corso degli anni la filosofia è rimasta invariata: promuovere artisti importanti e innovativi e coltivare le migliori promesse per creare una nuova generazione di talenti internazionali.

Victoria Miro is pleased to announce the opening of a new gallery in Venice.
The first exhibition at Victoria Miro Venice will be by Chris Ofili.
Entitled Poolside Magic the exhibition comprises a suite of pastel, charcoal and watercolour works on paper, which are being shown together for the first time. Poolside Magic, in which a man in coat-tails serves a naked woman beside a swimming pool, riffs on themes of sexuality, mutability, magic and the occult, making reference to the vibrant and sensuous landscape and culture of Trinidad, where the artist lives and works. Source material for the series includes a photograph of Trinidadian artist Boscoe Holder (1921 – 2007) at work in his Port of Spain studio. Opening during the Vernissage for the 57th Venice Biennale, the exhibition marks a return to the city for the artist. Ofili represented Britain at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003, when he presented his ambitious exhibition Within Reach, and in 2015 a suite of Ofili's paintings were included in All The World’s Futures, the 56th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, curated by Okwui Enwezor. Chris Ofili’s exhibition Weaving Magic is at the National Gallery, London from 26 April to 28 August 2017.
Victoria Miro’s new gallery will open to the public on 10 May 2017. This will be the gallery’s fourth exhibition space, joining gallery sites in Mayfair and Wharf Road, London. The new gallery will provide further opportunities for artists to stage exhibitions and special projects in an intimate environment in the heart of Venice, a city so beloved by artists.
The gallery will be housed in the former Galleria il Capricorno in the San Marco district of the city. First opened in 1971 by gallerist Bruna Aickelin, Galleria il Capricorno is renowned for showing key twentieth-century artists such as Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Cy Twombly and Robert Rauschenberg and, later, international contemporary artists, while attracting legendary figures such as Peggy Guggenheim to its quintessentially Venetian canalside location. Victoria Miro’s friendship with Aickelin is longstanding and, since the late 1990s, il Capricorno has staged solo exhibitions by gallery artists including Hernan Bas, Verne Dawson, NS Harsha, Chantal Joffe, Wangechi Mutu and Grayson Perry. Housed in a seventeenth-century building, in the heart of the San Marco district, the gallery has street and canal frontage.
Speaking about the new gallery, Victoria Miro said: “For some time now, Bruna and I have been talking about the legacy of Galleria il Capricorno, which has championed the very best contemporary art over the past five decades. We have worked together over many years, and I have long admired her strong and simple approach to presenting works in this small jewel box of a gallery in the heart of Venice. I am immensely grateful to her for entrusting us with this unique and beautiful gallery and look forward to extending the opportunity to our artists to respond to and show in this inspirational setting.”

About Chris Ofili
Chris Ofili was born in Manchester, England, in 1968, and currently lives and works in Trinidad. Solo exhibitions of his work have been presented internationally, including at the New Museum, New York (2014), travelling to Aspen Art Museum (2015); The Arts Club of Chicago (2010); Tate Britain, London (2010 and 2005); Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover (2006), The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2005), and Serpentine Gallery, London (1998). He represented Britain at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 and won the Turner Prize in 1998. Ofili received a CBE in the New Year’s Honours list in 2017. Victoria Miro represents 41 artists and artist estates. One of the largest commercial spaces in London, the gallery occupies 19,000 square feet across three sites in Mayfair and Wharf Road, N1. Victoria Miro first opened her gallery in Cork Street, Mayfair in 1985.
