Oggi l' Institut Francais ha comunicato che l'artista che rappresenterà la Francia alla prossima Biennale d'Arte sara Yto Barrada.

A seguito di una commissione di selezione organizzata dall'Istituto Francese, la Sig.ra Yto BARRADA è stata designata a rappresentare la Francia alla 61. Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte – La Biennale di Venezia nel 2026. La scelta di questa commissione, presieduta dalla Sig.ra Claire LE RESTIF, direttrice dell'Istituto Centro d'Arte Contemporanea di Ivry – le Crédac, è stato selezionato dal Sig. Jean-Noël BARROT, Ministro dell'Europa e degli Affari Esteri e Sig.ra Rachida DATI, Ministro della Cultura. 

La giuria ha scelto Yto BARRADA “per la sua pratica multidisciplinare che riunisce diverse comunità artistiche e sociali alla ricerca di una nuova utopia. Ricercatore iconoclasta, artista totale e senza confini, Yto BARRADA reinventa la “scultura sociale” alla luce di pedagogie alternative e trasforma i canoni del modernismo in un giardino plurale. Da Parigi a Tangeri, passando per New York, disegna una mappa unica che raccoglie nuove voci – invisibili, fragili, storiche o dimenticate – per trasmettere le loro storie. Tanti motivi che hanno portato la giuria a invitare Yto BARRADA a dispiegare i suoi mondi nello spazio del Padiglione Francese e a condividerli con il pubblico della Biennale di Venezia. » 

Nato nel 1971 a Parigi, Yto BARRADA è un artista franco-marocchino che vive e lavora tra New York e Tangeri. Ha studiato storia e scienze politiche alla Sorbona, poi fotografia a New York. Per 25 anni, ha sviluppato una pratica multidisciplinare - installazione, film, fotografia, scultura, tessile ed editoria - attraverso progetti a lungo termine che affrontano questioni diverse come il luogo del gioco nelle pedagogie alternative, la strumentalizzazione della botanica nelle politiche urbane, il traffico internazionale di fossili di dinosauro, l’antropologia coloniale, il panafricanismo o le politiche culturali durante la Guerra Fredda.

Esplorando contemporaneamente fatti culturali, processi naturali e storie storiche, il lavoro di Yto BARRADA presta particolare attenzione alla trasmissione del know-how locale, alla circolazione di forme estetiche e alle strategie di disobbedienza sociale. Evidenziando l'idea di comunità, parentela artistica e collaborazione con amici e familiari, spesso includono una rilettura delle avanguardie artistiche moderniste.

Yto BARRADA ha co-fondato la Cineteca di Tangeri nel 2006. Ha anche creato The Mothership , un centro di ricerca e residenza attorno a un giardino di piante tintorie che coltiva da dieci anni. The Mothership è un luogo di ritrovo per artisti, giardinieri e pensatori che vanta un approccio femminista, ecologico e giocoso alla creazione e trasmissione della conoscenza.

Il lavoro di Yto BARRADA è stato oggetto di mostre monografiche al Jeu de Paume, Parigi (2006); alla Renaissance Society, Chicago (2011); alla Tate Modern, Londra (2011); al Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, (2013); al Carré d'Art, Nîmes (2015); al Barbican Centre, Londra (2018); al MASS MoCA North Adams, Massachusetts (2021); al Museum of Modern Art, New York (2021); allo Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2022); alla Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Germania (2023); a Césure – Urban Plateau nell'ambito del Festival d'Autunno (2023); al MoMA PS1, New York (2024), tra gli altri. Ha partecipato inoltre a numerose biennali, tra cui quelle di Venezia (2007, 2011), Sharjah (2011), Istanbul (2013), Marrakech (2016), Gwangju (2018) e Whitney (2022).

Le opere di Yto BARRADA fanno parte di collezioni pubbliche di tutto il mondo, in particolare quelle del Centre Pompidou (Parigi), del MoMA (New York), della Tate Modern (Londra), della Kunsthalle Basel, del Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Reina Sofia (Madrid), Mathaf (Doha) e Mumok (Vienna), tra gli altri. 

Tra i suoi riconoscimenti, l'artista è stata nominata Artista dell'anno dal Deutsche Guggenheim nel 2011. Ha inoltre beneficiato della borsa di ricerca del Peabody Museum (Università di Harvard) nel 2013-2014, della Soros Arts Fellowship nel 2023 e ha ricevuto numerosi premi, tra cui l'Abraaj Group Art Prize nel 2015, il Roy R. Neuberger Prize nel 2019, il Mario Merz Prize e il Queen Premio Sonja Print nel 2022. 

È rappresentata dalla Polaris Gallery (Parigi), dalla Sfeir-Semler Gallery (Beirut, Amburgo) e dalla Pace Gallery (New York, Londra, Seul, Hong Kong, Ginevra, Los Angeles, Tokyo). 

Il Padiglione Francese

Il Padiglione Francese all’Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte – La Biennale di Venezia è realizzato dall’Istituto Francese, sotto l’egida del Ministero dell’Europa e degli Affari Esteri e del Ministero della Cultura. Per la sua 61a edizione, il Padiglione accoglierà il progetto di Yto BARRADA e il pubblico in uno spazio completamente rinnovato dopo un anno di lavori e un'edizione fuori sede della Biennale di Architettura 2025. Questo progetto di restauro, finanziato dalla Francia, è gestito dagli Edifici e la Direzione della Logistica (DIL) del Ministero dell'Europa e degli Affari Esteri attraverso il suo dipartimento dei lavori e degli edifici francesi in Italia (STBI) in coordinamento con l'Ambasciata di Francia in Italia. I lavori, che inizieranno a gennaio 2025 e dureranno 15 mesi, mirano a migliorare le prestazioni energetiche dell’edificio, offrire una migliore accoglienza ai visitatori e ammodernare le strutture esistenti. Da dicembre 2021 gli studi per questo progetto sono affidati all'architetto veneziano Donata Cherido.

For her project for the French Pavilion, Laure Prouvost has imagined a liquid and tentacular environment, questioning who we are, where we come from and where we are going. Tinged with utopia and surrealism, the project discloses an escapist journey, both tangible and imaginary, towards an ideal elsewhere. The exhibition takes the form of an invitation to melt into the different unveiled and shared realities intermingling here, and challenges the representation of a fluid and globalized world, made of exchanges, connectivity, and discrepancies.

In the continuation of her artistic practice, which intertwines representations of desire, oneirism, and a fantasized description of nature, Laure Prouvost focuses on language, word play, and translation. The attention given to her environment and to the natural and human elements that surround her calls to mind the immersive quality of her films, installations, objects, drawings, and tapestries. The contexts of Venice—a floating city built on water and by water, a city of facade and backstage—and of the Biennale, through the notion of representation, both appear as sources of inspiration.

The cornerstone of Deep See Blue Surrounding You / Vois Ce Bleu ProfondTeFondre is a fictional film. It takes the form of an initiatory journey filmed over the course of a road trip on horseback through France—from the Parisian suburbs to the northern region, from the PalaisIdéal du Facteur Cheval to the Mediterranean Sea—and, finally, to Venice. A sculptural installation, taking as a metaphorical point the trajectory of the octopus goes beyond the film, transcending out of the realms of the Pavilion and beyond. It uses typical processes of the artist’s practice such as leftover objects from the film, resin, clay, glass, plants or water vapor, and features performances interacting with the architecture and the objects. A monograph published with Flammarion accompanies the exhibition, taking the form of an atlas exploring and deepening Laure Prouvost’s artistic practice. Writers include: Ahu Antmen, Andrew Berardini, Yang Beichen, Massimiliano Gioni, Martha Kirszenbaum, Dean Kissick, Annabelle Ténèze.

The French Pavilion is produced by Institutfrançais, in close collaboration with the Ministry for Europe and Foreign affairs and the Ministry of Culture. The executive production is managed by ARTER.

Laure Prouvost was born in Profond near Hauterive. She now lives in her "deep see blue" caravan galloping towards Venice. Along the way, she will through herself in the air, through the cracks of the waves. Fallen from the nudes she received her BFA from Central St Martins, London in 2002 and studied towards her MFA at Goldsmiths College, London. She also took part in the LUX Associate Programme, and received the Max Mara Art Prize for Women (2011). She was awarded the Turner Prize (2013). Major solo exhibitions include: AM-BIG-YOU-US LEGSICON at MUHKA, Antwerp (2019); Ring, Sing and Drink for Trespassing at Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2018); Red Brick Art Museum, Beijing (2016); Haus Der Kunst, Munich (2015); New Museum, New York (2014) to name a few. Laure Prouvost is represented by Galerie Nathalie Obadia, carlier | gebauer, Lisson Gallery.

Martha Kirszenbaum was born in Vitry-sur-Seine (France) in 1983. She is a curator and writer based in Paris and Los Angeles. She graduated from Sciences Po in Paris and Columbia University in New York. She founded and directed Fahrenheit by FLAX in Los Angeles, and previously worked at the New Museum and MoMA in New York, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. She has organised exhibitions, screenings, performances and talks at renowned international institutions, and contributed to several publications and art magazines.

Riceviamo dalla galleria Nathalie Obadia la segnalazione che l'artista Laure Prouvost  rappresenterà il padiglione della Francia per la prossima edizione delle Biennale di Venezia 2019.

Born in Lille in 1978, Laure Prouvost lives and works in Antwerp. She was the recipient of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women in 2011 and the Turner Prize in 2013. A major solo exhibition, Ring, sing and drink for trespassing, will open at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris on 22 June. Galerie Nathalie Obadia presented her first solo show in a gallery in France, This is the visit, in 2014, followed by LOOKING AT YOU LOOKING AT US in 2017.

Padiglione Francia

It is with the ‘‘Merzbau musical’’ project that Xavier Veilhan will represent France for the 57th International Art Biennale of Venice in 2017.

This installation, with the two curators, Lionel Bovier and Christian Marclay, will make a play on volume and decor in the French Pavilion, inspired by the world of the recording studio. Visitors will be able to discover exceptional musical instruments, some of which will be created for the occasion, and listen to musicians from all horizons, throughout the Venice Biennale.

 

Born in 1963, Xavier Veilhan lives and works in Paris. His work, involving sculpture, painting, video, photography and installation, consists in taking hold of what is real, particularly in its biological and technical aspects, in archetypical, generic or prototypical forms, that question the worlds of historic and contemporary representation.

 

Xavier Veilhan has made a host of personal exhibits, at the Modern Art Museum in Paris (1993), CCC in Tours (1995), Consortium in Dijon (1999), Mamco in Geneva (1999-2000), Magasin in Grenoble (2000), CCA Kitakyushu (2002), Pompidou Center in Paris (2004), Modern and Contemporary Art Museum in Strasbourg (2005), Château de Versailles (2009), etc.

Starting in 2012, he developed Architectones, a series of art interventions in seven major modern buildings. In 2014, he took interest in the architecture on a new scale by designing the Château de Rentilly.

In 2015, he directed two films that extend his special explorations: Vent Moderne (La Villette) andMatching Numbers (3e Scène, Paris National Opera). The same year, dual shows (Galerie Perrotin, New York and Paris) pay a tribute to producers that shape the sound of our era. Hence, the genesis of this ‘‘Merzbau Musical’’ and the collaborative work envisaged for the Pavilion.

Ravel Ravel Unravel - France Pavilion

Anri Sala représentera la France à la 55e exposition internationale d’art de la Biennale de Venise. Le projet, pensé par Anri Sala pour les espaces du Pavillon allemand où il sera exceptionnellement présenté, s’intitule Ravel Ravel Unravel (2013).

Construit sur le verbe to ravel qui en anglais signifie « emmêler » et son contraire, to unravel, qui signifie « démêler », entre lesquels a été inséré l’homographe de to ravel, Ravel, en référence au célèbre compositeur français Maurice Ravel, auteur en 1930 du Concerto en ré pour la main gauche, qui constitue ici le cœur du projet d’Anri Sala.

 

DU SON DANS L'ESPACE

Le cœur du projet d’Anri Sala réside dans l’interprétation d’une même musique par deux musiciens. L’artiste précise : « chaque film se concentre sur la chorégraphie de la main gauche s’appropriant l’intégralité du clavier, tandis que la main droite demeure immobile ».

 

Dans ces films Anri Sala poursuit son travail sur l’espace et le son ainsi que sur le langage silencieux du corps. Il propose une expérience sur la différence et le même, dans une œuvre ambitieuse, qui pousse encore plus loin ses recherches de spatialisation sonore. L’œuvre fait autant appel à l’intellect qu’au corps du spectateur, générant une puissante expérience physique et émotionnelle, l’immergeant dans la musique.

 

Pour Anri Sala, les espaces du Pavillon allemand s’avèrent riches en possibilités pour son travail sur le son et l’espace. Sans se focaliser sur l’histoire du bâtiment, l’artiste n’en est pas moins intéressé par  les résonances particulières que celui-ci et son histoire donneront à son œuvre.

 

UN ÉCHANGE DE PAVILLON AVEC L'ALLEMAGNE

Christine Macel, commissaire du pavillon français et Anri Sala ; Susanne Gaensheimer, commissaire du pavillon allemand et les artistes invités - le plasticien Ai Weiwei, les photographes indien Dayanita Singh et sud-africain Santu Mofokeng, ainsi que le réalisateur, scénariste et producteur franco-allemand Romuald Karmakar - ont décidé d’échanger les espaces des pavillons français et allemand à l’occasion de la biennale.

 

Le dialogue international joue aujourd’hui un rôle essentiel dans le monde de l’art, qui se caractérise bien plus par la perméabilité des sphères culturelles que par la rigidité des frontières nationales. Cet échange participe de cette vision d’une culture européenne commune, partie intégrante d’une communauté culturelle globale.
