The Grand Canal - evento collaterale

(Italiano sotto)

The Grand Canal of China, a living cultural heritage and the theme of this collateral exhibition, was dug to open up the exchange of human and material resources, and led to an encyclopedic dissemination of art, ideas and culture consistent with today’s globalization. This exhibition shows the fusion of contemporary Chinese art, history, tradition and the material world. In an exploration of the Grand Canal’s cultural and practical significance, Chinese artists deal with complementary dichotomies including manmade/natural, traditional/contemporary, male/female and material/spiritual.

Artists: Bai Chongmin,Gao Jie,He Haoyuan,Huang Rui,Peng Xiaojia,Qiu Zhijie,Shi Qing,Wang Du,Irrelevant Committee (Gao Fei, Chen Zhiyuan, Li Liangyong, Ye Nan,Guo Lijun, Jia Hongyu, Niu Ke, Wang Guilin), Xiao Lu, Xu Bing, Zhang Yangzi

(italiano sotto)

A woman looks with intense energy across life and through us to the other side. What is on that other side? The residual steel glistens with a powerful redundancy; a residue that has failed to make the lives it could have made. A cinematographic flux suffuses the temporality of Norayr Kasper‘s photography, as distant from nostalgia as from photo-reportage. What is at stake in these works, is not disappearance, it is existanceSteel-Lives, Still-Life is a narrative bracketed within a Palladian lightness. The woman knows too she has been bracketed by a world that has gone on without her. This is still life but one which has the reality to shock.

Italiano

(Italiano sotto)

The Salon Suisse is the official accompanying programme of the Swiss participation in the International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. It comprises panel discussions and readings, but also experimental formats such as audiovisual performances, reenactments and performance lectures. This year's edition is dedicated to the legacy of the European Enlightenment in the contemporary art world. The curator of the Salon Suisse, Jörg Scheller, has invited international theorists and artists to engage in a discussion on Enlightenment from a multi-perspective view. All events take place at the historic Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi. They are free of charge and open to everyone.

Welcome to the second edition of the Salon Suisse! My name is Jörg Scheller, I am an art historian, journalist, and musician based in Bern, Switzerland. The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia has asked me to curate this collateral programme of the Swiss participation in the 55th Venice Art Biennale. I have dedicated the Salon Suisse 2013 to the legacy and the afterlife of European Enlightenment in today's global art world. After all, the term “salon” carries with it certain historical overtones. One might ask, however: “Enlightenment”? Isn't that a worn-out concept of the 18th century? Well, many of the problems that the 18th century grappled with have resurfaced and are fiercely contested?for instance the relation between religion and politics, the freedom of speech and critique, or the role of art in science and society. I have invited renowned and emerging international theorists and artists to engage in a discussion on the legacy of Enlightenment from a multi-perspective view. Can we face the challenges of today without the radical optimism, the sharp wit, and the utopian spirit of Enlightenment? How to develop new forms of Enlightenment beyond naive believe in progress and eurocentrism, but also shortsighted multiculturalism and blind faith in the market? And what are the roles of art and culture in this play? Is the art system a “blossom of Enlightenment” (Beat Wyss) or rather the “sunday face of greed” (Peter Sloterdijk)? Having said this, we will discuss – and experience – recent art trends such as “transhuman aesthetics”, “arts based research”, “digital fluxus” and “performance lectures”.  Moreover, I have invited researchers from the field of exhibition history to explore the history of Venice and the Venice Art Biennale. The “Dialectics of Enlightenment” (Horkheimer & Adorno) are perfectly mirrored by La Biennale herself?a large-scale exhibition of contemporary art based on the humanist ideals of Enlightenment, but primarily intended to strengthen the economy of Venice.

Romanian Pavilion at the 55th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia Giardini della Biennale

“Solid things can be nomadic but never movement.” (Mykki Blanco)
An Immaterial Retrospective of the Venice Biennale takes the entire history of the Venice Biennale and reflects it in a national pavilion as in a fragment of a mirror. The retrospective can be seen as an ephemeral monument to the biennale, a critique of its Euro-centrism, vain display of power and luxury or of mere conservatism but also a celebration of its openness for experiments, for the coexistence of virtually all the trends, media, genres, that art uses or represents. Yet, it is also something more.
By turning the monumental into the immaterial and the object into action, by enacting history, the project also transforms this history; it actualizes it. It is a simultaneous affirmation and undoing, an attempt to archive which is at the same time turned against the weight of the archive, of the storage, of the labels and keys of reading that come with it. The work is appealing to the public’s memory only to reveal its constructed nature and to question how memories are selected, who is reminding us what and by which means.
A retrospective is generally a grandiose and thorough enterprise. In this case, however, by reproducing a variety of works with the means of only a few human bodies, the work changes the scale of what a retrospective can be and implicitly of the biennial itself. It hints at its vastness but it makes it accessible. The bodies of the performers are there present, alive, in tension, contradiction or dependence to one another, exposed to the public.
Throughout this year’s Venice biennale, during its opening hours, the performers in the Romanian pavilion are recreating their version of a world’s exposition, one hundred years of history in a day, every day.
Alexandra Pirici, born in 1982, lives and works in Bucharest, Romania. Alexandra has a background in choreography and performing arts but attempts to work undisciplined, across different mediums, including film and music. Her work has been presented at, among others: Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin; Tanzquartier Vienna; Kanuti Gilde Saal, Talinn; Nottdance Festival, UK; Kunstmule, Germany; Salonul de Proiecte/ MNAC Anexa, Bucharest; Temps d’Images international festival, and the Balkan Dance Platform.
Manuel Pelmuş is one of the most well-known representatives of Romanian dance in the international context. He works in Bucharest and Oslo. His performances have been extensively presented throughout Europe and the United States. In 2011 he founded Căminul Cultural in Bucharest, together with Brynjar Abel Bandlien and Farid Fairuz. Manuel Pelmuş was awarded Berlin Art Prize for Performing Arts in 2012 by the Akademie der Künste Berlin.

Nuova Zelanda Bill Culbert

Celebrated New Zealand sculptor, photographer and installation artist Bill Culbert has been invited by Creative New Zealand to present his work at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013.
Otago-born Culbert painted and worked more conceptually before beginning his experimentation with electric light in the late 1960s.  Often associated with kinetic and constructivist art, he also has a strong affinity with Marcel Duchamp and Lazlo Moholy-Nagy through his work with found objects and through a continuing exploration of ideas around light, energy, perspective, social space and politics.
Culbert has sustained a busy exhibition schedule throughout his career, with more than 100 solo exhibitions in New Zealand, England, Europe, the United States and Australia since 1960, and many more group exhibitions and major public art commissions.  Details of his exhibition in Venice to come.
