Venice Agendas 2015

Venice Agendas 2015 is a programme of breakfast events and performances, curated by workinprogress, during the preview week of the 56th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia followed by a series of outcome events that take place internationally throughout 2015. The theme for this edition is Crossing Boundaries; an open brief, which considers the many ways art not only trespasses geographical territories but how it crosses cultural, political and artistic boundaries. Since 2011 Venice Agendas has also included live art presentations.

The Biennale reinforces nation building and territorial borders when even now maps are being rewritten and the concept of free speech is under attack.  The idea of national pavilions at the Venice Biennale representing the essence of an identity has been increasingly questioned in the context of today’s globalized world, however where there are boundaries there are crossings.  The emphasis of these agendas is on the cross over and exchange between artists, writers, filmmakers and critics whilst reflecting on the cross border reality of the present time.

VENICE AGENDAS AT CZ95 Discussions curated by: Terry Smith    Tickets: eventbriteVA15
CZ95, Giudecca 95, 30133 Venezia
Vaporetto: Zitelle on lines
2, 4.1 and 4.2

OPEN BORDERS:  Where are you from?   Wednesday 6 May 2015   10 .00 – 11.00h:  breakfast from 9.30h
Moderators: JW Stella and Mark Waugh
Considers identity - do artists belong to one culture through their Nationality, or are they citizens of the world? This debate asks questions about statehood, effects of global migration on cultural boundaries, and if it matters where you are from.

CLOSED BORDERS: Whose boycott is it anyway?   Thursday 7 May 2015 10 .00 – 11.00h:  breakfast from 9.30h
Moderator: Gilane Tawadros
The recent questioning of geographical boundaries, both democratically and by force, and the withdrawal of support by some European countries for various International artists and institutions act effectively as a boycott with cultural events being altered by political agendas. Is this a genuine support for civil rights or a convenient way for governments to play politics with culture?

CROSSING BOUNDARIES:  Speed Date   Friday 8 May 2015 10 .00 – 11.00h:  breakfast from 9.30h
Moderator: Tim Rawlins
Piloted at VA13, Speed Dating gets people talking, involved and networking. With 60 questions relating to the idea of identity and crossing boundaries, each deals specifically with how we connect to ‘local’ culture and how that interfaces with the wider international agenda.

BORDER LINE:  Rights of Passage  Wednesday 6 May - Friday 8 May 2015 11.00 – 12.00h
Curated by: Jean Wainwright

Jon Adams: 18.00h Wednesday 6 May 2015
Jon performs Games with the Water Horse, a performance/installation piece that he has learnt as a memory journey. Starting from a time on the 12 hour clock face (provided on request by an audience member), then following Fibonacci numbers, he will describe events connected to time, but liberated from an easily digested narrative, informed by his synaethesia.

Katrina Palmer: 18.00h Thursday 7 May 2015*
Katrina will read from a selection of her books on a one-to-one basis with one individual for up to ten minutes, along with a further 12 audience members as observers. Marita Isobel Solberg: 18.00h Friday 8 May 2015
Marita will perform: There exists love, will, sounds and movements in this vast room. We are deeply connected. The performance concerns reflections on the challenges, conflicts, potentials, aspirations, importance and impact of being both a citizen of the world while remaining close to our roots. A spoken word session which includes poetry, movement, singing, making sounds and rhythm.

Venice Agendas 2015 presented in partnership with Turner Contemporary, SHAPE London, and University for the Creative Arts with additional support from Sámi Dáiddačehpiid Searvi, Arts University Bournemouth, DACS, Nuova Icona, Clocktower Productions, Audio Arts; CZ95 and Municipalità di Venezia. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Katrina Palmer works through a range of media including published stories, live reading/performances and installations which include recordings. Palmer locates the sculptural object in fictional narratives. These stories typically feature artist-protagonists negotiating aspects of materiality and the dynamics of fictional spaces. End Matter, an Artangel commission launches on 26 April 2015 in Portland, Devon with a new publication End Matter, available from Book Works. In May 2015 her work will be included in the group show The Weight of Data at Tate Britain, and she will have a solo show at the Henry Moore Institute Leeds later in the year. Katrina’s work was recently included in the exhibition Mirror City at Hayward Gallery, London.  Courtesy MOT International.www.motinternational.org/Katrina_palmer.html

Jon Adams works in a variety of mediums, is a trained geologist and considers himself to be an ‘Outsider Artist’. His work references his neurodiversity including Asperger’s (an autism spectrum condition), dyslexia and synaesthesia, a neurological condition in which stimulation of one sense leads to automatic, involuntary responses in a second sense, for example, ‘seeing or tasting sounds’. Jon has recently been awarded the first digital commission by the Speakers Art Fund for Democracy Streets celebrating Parliament in the making throughout 2015 (with Mozilla, National Portrait Gallery, Arts Council England and Local Trust). Jon Adams is currently an Associate Artist of the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth and Research Fellow in Disability Arts within the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of Portsmouth.

The European Cultural Centre exhibition "Personal Structures - Crossing Borders"

In the context of la Biennale di Venezia 2015, the European Cultural Centre presents its opening exhibition "Personal Structures - Crossing Borders" in two of its prestigious Palazzo's in Venice, Palazzo Bembo and Palazzo Mora.

The exhibition shows an extensive combination of established artists and artists whose practice is less known. Not only artists who are considered "the best", but a cross section of what can be seen as art today. The artists, although mainly from Europe, come from many different parts of the world and are expressing themselves in various ways. Visually, the artworks may appear very different. Their common ground is the artist's subjective, personal expression of his or her reflection on the concepts Time, Space and Existence.

The exhibition mainly presents recent artworks by living artists, either site-specific, especially made for this exhibition, or coming directly out of the collection of the artist. Some rooms in the Palazzo's are dedicated to the presentation of a single artist, while other rooms will host a combination of projects and works. Strong statements give each of the rooms a very specific character. The exhibition features a broad variety of artistic media; video, sculptures, paintings, drawings, photos and installations. Since the more than 100 participating artists originate from very diverse cultures representing over 50 countries and are also of very different age, the topics Time - Space and Existence are highlighted from unusual, very personal points of view.

The EUROPEAN CULTURAL CENTRE exhibition "Personal Structures - Crossing Borders" shows the commonness and differences between Europeans, this in Dialogue with works of Non-Europeans. In addition the exhibition stimulates a more conscious relationship from the spectator towards his daily surrounding aiming to increase the awareness of their own personal Existence as human beings influenced by a specific Culture within Space and Time.

We are all in this alone - Hristina Ivanoska and Yane Calovski

We are all in this alone by Hristina Ivanoska and Yane Calovski addresses the notion of faith in today’s concurrent and multiple socio-political conditions. The project references a number of intricate sources: a fresco painting from the church of St. Gjorgi in Kurbinovo, painted by an unknown author in the 12th Century, as well as writings by Simone Weil, Luce Irigaray, and personal notes by Paul Thek dating from the 1970s. While searching for political values in the representations of formal aesthetic and literary sources, the work carries a specific urgency to articulate ways we continuously engage and disengage the past from the present while questioning the notion of faith.
Hristina Ivanoska’s drawings and objects are inspired by the texts of Simone Weil and Luce Irigaray. Weil questions her faith in God, considering it as a personal decision and path that one goes through alone. On the other hand, Irigaray explains the emotional and inexplicable (love) relation toward God in her essay “La Mystérique” (from the book Speculum de l’autre femme, 1974), asking: “But how does one tackle these things, even if one feels passionately about them, if there is no sense of vocation?”
Yane Calovski’s drawings and collages refer to recently discovered correspondences of Paul Thek in the Marzona Collection in Berlin, addressing the difficulty to survive while creating, producing and maintaining ones own work and keeping faith in the idealism of collaborative production. Additionally, addressing the value of hidden poetics in the details positioned well beyond the mundane clichés of one’s own need to produce language, Calovski literally paints invisible (erased) icons, procured through the physical disposal of the image as a religious symbol.
The project also incorporates a short film as a prelude, which further addresses faith not only as an emotional and intellectual condition, but also as a contemporary socio-political anomaly.

Antarctic Pavilion

Despite all the kilometres of ground untrodden by human foot, mountains unnamed and creatures unknown, Antarctica is a cultural space. The projects featured in the Antarctic Pavilion propose an expanded southern polar imaginary – testaments to the Antarctic community that would yet know itself, and the continent, in ways transcending national-scientific missions.

The Antarctic Pavilion is a long-term project, whose uncertain status vis a vis the Venice Biennale’s nationally over-determined structure is a provocation: a quasi-institutional claim to represent a transnational sphere, out of line with the festival’s politics of territorial representation. It points to Antarctica as a Giardini of sorts, in which the sovereignty-obsessed cultural ambitions relevant two centuries ago still seem to hold sway – and proposes alternative futures.

The Antarctic Pavilion is initiated by the artist Alexander Ponomarev. Drawing upon his background in nautical engineering and early career as a submariner, Ponomarev’s work chiefly invokes journeys at sea and remote terrain – contexts in which to explore the relationship between illusion and reality, the utility of art, and the shifting tides of personal and cultural history. Ponomarev is a regular visitor to Antarctica, and has realized numerous projects on the continent. The Antarctic Pavilion draws upon his longstanding interest in Antarctica’s potential as a cultural field.

The Antarctic Pavilion wishes to acknowledge the its General Partner, AVC Charity Foundation / Andrey Cheglakov.

Antarctica – no ring for it on the Olympic flag and no pavilion in the Giardini: The only continent without a biennale.

According to treaty, Antarctica is not owned. Yet a particular regime reigns supreme: After the heroic narratives of imperial exploration it has been colonized by competing national interests sublimated as cooperative scientific endeavour. After the age of glory hunters, making claims god, king and country, it has been annexed in the name of a research elite.

Whatever official agendas Antarctica’s inhabitants pursue, it is not beyond the pale to infer that they entertain additional definitions of placehood and their role in relation to it. Given the fact that the continent is an international zone with suspended sovereign claims, don’t these potential modes of identification hold some promise?—Perhaps the spirit of a transnational project even more ambitious, and worthwhile, than the one currently in effect? Let us hypothesize the existence of Antarctic cultures and whole new worldviews emanating from this region that have nothing to do with the ‘mission’.

The Antarctic Biennale is conceived by the artist Alexander Ponomarev as a cultural exchange with the continent’s scientists and support staff. This independently funded project – bringing artists, architects and other thinkers down South – will confront the resident elect with visions of Antarctic enterprise that they may not recognize, and attempt to draw out the implications of the Antarctic experience that go undocumented. Through exhibitions, performance and dialogue, the project will pursue an expanded Antarctic imaginary.

The Antarctic Biennale will be held in Antarctica in 2016 aboard international research vessels. To keep up to date with news please sign up for our newsletter.

Glasstress 2015 Gotika

The State Hermitage Museum and Berengo Studio are delighted to announce a joint exhibition Glasstress 2015 Gotika which explores how medieval ideas and communication methods have imperceptibly crept into our modern conscience despite our technological advances and how the Gothic concept influences contemporary art.

The Gothic style, born in European visual art and architecture, was the first international style, the common language and modus vivendi of many nations for at least four centuries. In like fashion, contemporary art has become the international style, the "Biblia pauperum,” understood today from Europe to America, from North Africa to Japan.

The exhibition concept is by Dr. Dimitri Ozerkov, Director of Hermitage 20/21 and of Contemporary Art Department in the State Hermitage Museum. Dr. Ozerkov will curate Glasstress 2015 Gotika with Adriano Berengo of Berengo Studio.

Glasstress 2015 Gotika will combine historical works from the Hermitage collection and newly commissioned art works in glass,  all with a Gothic theme.  It will  be on exhibit at the Palazzo Franchetti in Venice, a Gothic palazzo in one of the most Gothic cities in the world.  Glasstress 2015 Gotika will also be on exhibit on Murano at the Berengo Foundation  in a glass furnace that has not been used for decades.

The State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and is one of the oldest and largest museums in the world. In 2007, Hermitage 20/21 was launched to collect, exhibit and study the art of the 20th and 21st centuries.  Hermitage 20/21 is the official sponsor of Glasstress 2015 Gotika.

Berengo Studio was established in 1989 and has focused on bringing visual artists from all over the world to Venice to collaborate with Murano’s famous glass masters.  This innovative cultural initiative has married the extraordinarily rich and enduring Venetian traditions of glassmaking with contemporary art. Glasstress has been an official collateral event of the international Venice Biennale since 2009.

PRESENTAZIONI SPECIALI
